This morning I ate a bowl of Kashi with granola in a bowl with 2% milk. This seems like a pretty high impact exercise for a spoon compared to typical spoon use. The spoon I used was from this set and performed admirably under this high pressure situation. My hands and mouth did not sustain any injuries related to the use of this spoon during this meal. I do not feel ill or unwell like I have taken any heavy metal poisoning. The spoon did not sustain any damage during this meal.
The product I eventually found that I really liked the size of was the MCIRCO "oval large" style spoon, which is also pictured in the attached photo, for comparison, and can be found on Amazon here: MCIRCO 8-piece Stainless Steel Table Spoon Dinner Spoon Set
What I liked better about the New Star dinner spoon: smooth edges
What I liked better about the MCIRCO dinner spoon: larger size, better balanced, classier finish
It is true that with the MCIRCO spoons, I had to go through them and fish out the ones with rough edges and throw those in the charity box. This netted me four "good" spoons, which I kept. And at the low price for the MCIRCO's, I can't complain. Of those four good MCIRCOs I kept, they are such a nice size--just what I was looking for and have so far seemed sturdy.
The New Star spoons are holding up fine, too. They're nice. I like the glossiness of the finish and the weight. I just wish they were a little larger.
But this order of the teaspoons was a crushing disappointment.
The spoons arrived oily/grimy, misshapen, with flecks of black powder, and sharp unfinished edges. The flimsy and dirty box they arrived in says "Desert 444," a rather inept misspelling of "dessert." They have no imprint of the name New Star emblazoned on them embedded in the metal. The metal is just blank. They are not the same weight as the equivalent-sized New Star forks I ordered only just a couple of months ago.
There are obvious chips, i.e. holes in the thin veneer the counterfeiter applied over the surface of the spoons--revealing the cheap pot metal (lead?!?!) beneath. (See my photos.) If they're made of lead, it would be dangerous to even use them.
Given that these are clearly a counterfeit batch, I hope New Star will read this review and rectify the problem.
The party in the order details said to be the seller is Amazon itself but somewhere a counterfeiter came into the mix, which I hate to see since it's a shame for the good name of New Star to be dragged through the mud like this.
New Star! Counterfeit product is going out in your name! Please fix the problem!
I've only got one feline flatware pilferer, but my spoons have been steadily going missing for a year.
These spoons are pretty hefty and well balanced so I imagine they will be just too heavy for my cat to get a good grip on. It's nice to see they've considered these things in the design room.
Kitty was watching me scoop out hard ice cream from the container with interest as the spoon didn't bend at all, so I have the feeling I'm not the only one impressed with their solid construction.
At basically the price of dollar store flatware, I can't get too mad if I need to replace them again, but for now I've affordably replenished my family's spoon needs for a little over a buck a piece.
