This is a book about the person and politician Thaçi. Not the time he lived and shaped and even less about the plight of Albanians under the Serbian occupation. The situation of Albanians after the Serbs took Kosovo from Albania in 1912 was bad for more than a century. Killings, expulsions and mistreatments of the Albanian population are the worst of any people in Europe. All really became unbearable when Milosevic came to power and started his hellish wars in Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and finally in Kosovo. Eventually in 1997 Albanians decided to say enough is enough and a people's army was born to hit back Milosevic and Serbia. Thaçi, no doubt, played a role in the upraising against Milosevic, but he also, like a Machiavellian that he is, took advantage of the resistance to establish and strengthen his power. In the book Hashim Thaçi is portrayed as a heroic and cunning young man who has spent the last 30 years serving the Albanian cause and the cause of freedom. This is just a part of the truth, Many other parts of the truth about him are not in the book. His history ought to be told from neutral historians who will also write about the dark side of Thaçi.

Less than twenty years ago, a young, ethnic Albanian student leader called Hashim Thaçi led a revolution against Slobodan Milošević. During a period when Western military engagement unleashed violent sectarianism, global terrorism, and became a catalyst for the biggest exodus of migrants since the Second World War, the 1999 NATO intervention in Kosovo remains a unique example of a process that led to a peaceful transition from vicious ethnic war to modern democracy. Thaçi is now President of Europe’s youngest country.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 18, 2018There are very few biographies of contemporary leaders of the Western Balkans. We read the histories about the battles old and new but never about the actors - the people behind the stories. President of Kosovo may not be everyone's cup of tea, but the book is a well written profile of his, by two rather good writers. As such, it is a rarity among books about Balkans. I especially liked the childhood and years described here and Mr. Thaci's coming of age stories.
