New Super Mario Bros. Wii
Developers at Nintendo have dreamed of creating a simultaneous multiplayer Super Mario Bros. game for decades. The Wii console finally makes that dream come true for everyone. Now players can navigate the side-scrolling worlds alone as before or invite up to three others to join them at the same time on the same level at any point in the game for competitive and cooperative multiplayer fun. With the multiplayer mode, the newest installment of the most popular video game franchise is designed to bring yet another type of family entertainment into living rooms and engage groups of friends in fast-paced Super Mario Bros. fun.
New Super Mario Bros. Wii offers a combination of cooperation and competition. Players can pick each other up to save them from danger or toss them into it.
Mario, Luigi and two Toads are all playable characters, while many others from the Mushroom Kingdom make appearances throughout the game. Players can even ride different Yoshi characters and use their tongues to swallow enemies, items and even balls of fire.
In some areas, players use the motion abilities of the Wii Remote controller. The first player to reach a seesaw might make it tilt to help his or her character reach a higher platform – or might make it tilt incorrectly just to mess with other players.
New items include the propeller suit, which will shoot players high into the sky with just a shake of the Wii Remote, and Mario’s new ability to transform into Penguin Mario.
At the end of each stage during the coin battle multiplayer mode, players are ranked based on the number of coins they have collected.

PROS:
+++ An insane and frantic multi-player experience that teeters between competitive and cooperative.
+++ Easy to play but still challenging.
+++ Colorful and whimsical level designs with lots of clever effects and features.
+++ New suits, flowers, and power-ups
CONS:
--- Lack of an online multi-player mode.
--- Forced use of motion control that could have been better assigned to a button.
--- The Propeller Hat suit is really terrible. What a lame power-up...
GAMEPLAY: Back on the NES, Super Mario Bros. almost single-handedly defined the 2d platformer genre. Collect coins, stars, and power-ups while traversing absurd platforms, traps, and castles to safe Princess Peach from Bowser. The game is a very strong nod to Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World, with a return of the Koopa Kids and airships and castles. Gameplay is largely unchanged from the DS New Super Mario Bros. and features 3D graphics on a 2D playing field. Wall sliding, wall jumping, butt-stomping, spin-attacks... it's all here and largely unchanged.
In single player mode, the game is a little bit slower paced compared to previous 2D Mario offerings, but still very enjoyable. I wonder if part of that slower pace is an illusion due to the wide screen television. Playing solo is pretty much what I have come to expect from a Nintendo platformer. Mutli-player is a chaotic frenzy though, with players constantly shoving, smashing, and bouncing each other around the screen. The multi-player mode makes for a great party game that usually results in tons of laughter, screaming, trash talking, etc. Four player mode gets a bit dicey though because of the two Toad characters, which look identical except for their coloring. I'm a bit color blind and they don't look distinct at all when things get crazy on screen. The fact that other people who have better color distinction capability complain about the same issue really is the game's fault and not my own. Two identical carbon copy characters on screen? That's lazy, Nintendo. At least give them different shaped hats.
The new features are mostly subtle. The best new addition is the Ice Flower, which allows you to throw ice balls that freeze enemies. The propeller hat is a new addition as well, but I honestly think it is bland and quite un-fun. I would have preferred to see a return of the the Racoon suit or Tanooki suit or even the cape from Super Mario World.
The Bubble Mode is a take-it-or-leave-it feature as far as I'm concerned. At any time you can press a button and the game will just let you get past the really tough spots for you. Some people say that this makes the game too easy, but my argument is that you just shouldn't use it. I personally have lots of fun sending Mario to his untimely (and repeated) doom. The failure is part of the fun, and I see no need for me to ever use the bubble mode except in Multi-player when I need to go take a quick break and don't want to interrupt the other players' experience.
ONLINE MULTI-PLAYER: None. I read in more than a few places that Nintendo's explanation is that developers were pushing the Wii so hard with this game that it couldn't handle the strain of network traffic. I don't buy that excuse for a second. The game may have a lot going on at times, but it clearly isn't pushing the console to the limit. This game could have allowed distant friends to play together, but Nintendo made the choice to keep all multi-player local, which is a shame.
CONTROLS: For the most part the game controls very well. The controller is held sideways, which makes have a Wii Motion Plus accessory kind of uncomfortable to have plugged in and the silicone Wii remote covers are slightly awkward as well. Beyond the physical arrangement of the controller, today's Mario doesn't seem to get up to speed as quickly when he runs compared to his younger self. Perhaps years of being a successful plumber celebrity, eating cake with Princess Peach after saving her in every game, and impending old age have taken a toll on his cardiovascular health, but he feels sluggish right out the gate. Once up to speed he moves pretty quickly though. It's not a huge change but if you've played a lot of 2D Mario games, the difference is noticeable. Running speed is a minor quibble though compared to the forced use of motion control to do the spin attack, lifting heavy objects (like ice blocks), and the propeller hat jump. Motion control as an option would have been nice, but forcing motion control when a button press would be more responsive and effective is a real annoyance. I adapted just fine, but just because I adapted doesn't mean that I have to like it.
GRAPHICS: Clean, bright, and colorful. The character models could be more detailed, but overall the game looks good. Many levels have some nifty graphical effects, such as light sourcing in darkened areas when you throw fireballs. While the game could have looked better, it is still a standout title on the Wii in terms of graphical quality.
AUDIO: The audio is ok, but feels uninspired. It's more of the various Mario themes we've heard over the years mixed in with some new and instantly forgettable melodies.
VALUE: With a solid single player mode and fun multi-player options, the game should be able to provide most people with a good amount of play time. There are 64 main levels and a bunch of unlockable levels. None of the levels I have played yet managed to be overly difficult but the later levels have definitely been challenging. Every level has three large Yoshi coins which will give the completionists out there some extra goals to strive for.
Considering this was the ultra-hyped Second (or 23rd) Coming of Mario, I really expected better because Nintendo has done better in the past. That isn't to say this is a bad game. It is very good in fact, but that doesn't mean there are a lot of things lacking that could have been done to turn a great game into a spectacular, mind-blowing revival of the franchise. For all of my criticisms, I love this game.

Controls are normally a massive thing for me when playing a game and quite ironically I hate the Wii games where it's all based on the exact movement of the controller etc, but this game is not like that at all. You tilt the wii remote to its side and use the up,down, left, right and 2 button, just like gameboy controls.
It's nice to see they still actually make games like this still, It's nice to have a change from all the hi-def racers and shooters once in a while!
Each level has something unique about it and my children love to revisit their favourites (usually the Yoshi levels)
The powers are classic and with the new additional powers especially flying it adds a new element to the game play.
Just when you think you are getting to the end of the game and you have done it all world 9 is opened up with 8 more levels which are in turn opened by collecting the star coins in each world.
Hours and hours of family fun (and arguments)
In single player, it is just as fun, but because one feels that there are no obstacles (or friends as I used to call them) to perfection, I continually restarted games should I miss a coin or a secret passage or even if I lost a life. This made progress hard, and it took me about 7 hours to reach world 4. At this point I saw mario every time I shut my eyes, so I took a razor, heated it in a candle flame to sterilise it, and carved the world map from the original Super Mario Brothers onto my forearm.
It is the best 2D Mario game ever (at least until Super Mario 3D land is released).
You can play solo or with up to 3 friends (yes 4 people at the same time in a Mario game :D) and save and resume solo or with other people. The controls are great, back to the simple 2 buttons plus digital D pad with a small addition: you shake the Wii remote to make the character do a twist and grab things. A great control indeed.
Recommend this title for all fans of Mario and newbies to.
