My years as a feminist activist taught me many things, including the fact that the essential ingredients in the milieu of social change—freedom of expression and personal liberty—have suffered extraordinary damage in the name of "social equality" or "feminism" or "civil rights." Agendas cloaked in these respected labels of have turned people away from the heart of these ideals and, in some cases, actually reversed social progress for everyone, including women, people of color, and others who have an investment in the quality of life.
There is enormous irony in the fact that it is those on the left—the supposed protectors of all things culturally important—who are exacting severe social punishments on anyone who espouses an idea or opinion that challenges that status quo or may be deemed "offensive" to some special interest group.
There is, however, a method to the madness of those who have chosen to protect us from ourselves.
You see, there is nothing in the theory of feminism or civil rights that requires people to stop thinking their own thoughts. On the contrary, civil rights are reliant on individual freedom. The spiral down and away from individual liberty can be traced directly to the rejection of the rights of one for the rights of the many. This group-rights mentality is nothing new; it is steeped in the "progressive" concept that the individual must submit to what is best for everyone else. This idea stems not from the ideal of civil rights but from the well of socialism, the foundational model of the far Left. Once we accept group theory, it not only becomes easier to reject individual rights (like freedom of expression) but actually becomes essential that we do so.

'The New Thought Police' by Tammy Bruce is a brilliant, scathing critique of the liberal Left and their all out assault against free speeech and critical thinking through the politics of groupthink and intimidation. Tammy undertands the reasoning and knows the methods behind this planned lobotomization of American society on a first hand basis. As an openly gay feminist and one time president of the Los Angeles chapter of NOW (National Organization for Women) Tammy has observed the evolution of Leftist thuggery and now speaks out against it with a voice of clarity and reason.

One of the most refreshing things about Ms. Bruce is the undeniable fact that she doesn't fit neatly into any ideological box which would thereby marginalize what she has to share. Describing herself as an openly gay, pro-choice, gun owning, pro-death penalty, liberal, voted for Reagan feminist, she is anything but a mouthpiece for any special interest group. Such being the case, what she has to say is particularly chilling and extremely important for America to wake up to the threat and practice critical thinking and speak out boldly without fear.

'The New Thought Police' was published in 2001, ten years before Ann Coulter's just released 'Demonic'. Strange how both writers come from opposite ends of the political/ideological spectrum yet both view current Leftist tactics as a threat to the American way of life. I recommend that you purchase, read and pass-on a copy of both books.

Amazing clarity and ease of reading

Tammy Bruce, like so many authors, has a large axe to grind. She does it very well. This book is very easy to read, educational, and enjoyable.

Perhaps part of my reason for enjoying it that I have had similar experiences with the Left Wing Thought Police. Since I happen to believe that the extremes of both parties are two wings of the same bird of prey, I tend to offend a few people. The Right may be indignant, but the Left has actually wished death upon me as well as banning me from several political web sites. Once for telling a joke, once for mentioning a new Bilderberger book, and once for 'questioning' Israel. OK, the denizens of the far right have been equally nasty to be honest. Yes, I do have several 'black eyes' in my political past.

Ms. Bruce knows well of that which she speaks of. She was the leader of the L.A. chapter of NOW for many years. NOW never completely accepted her because of her refusal to follow all of the rules of a cult like organization. The radical left is barely more tolerant than, dare I say, Stalin, Hitler, and Mao.

The amazing thing is that liberalism evolved with the Jeffersonian ideology that people ought to be generally free to both think and say that which they feel is appropriate. What happened?

Can we trust political extremists? I think not.

Tammy Bruce writes with an authenticity that comes from her work within the gay-feminist-liberal community. Her opinions forged from direct experience cannot be easily dismissed. She points out a clear distinction between the classical liberal and the liberal of today. The negative reviews you read here are written by those who do not want you to find out the truth about how the far left radicals have taken over the Democratic Party. They are enormously fearful that you will find out their agenda is to destroy individual liberty and impose their brand of group thought on us all.

I previously read Tammy's later books, The Death of Right and Wrong and The New American Revolution. These impressive books made me want to read her first book and I found it to be excellent as well. Ms. Bruce is one of the best writers I've read. She writes in an easy style using powerful examples and fascinating experiences.

This book will shake you with a dreaded sense of where this country is headed if we don't wake up and actively fight for the freedom that is our heritage. Slowly but steadily our freedoms are being eroded by liberals attaching labels to anyone with whom they disagree. Their tactics are oppressive, punitive, and discriminatory. These so called champions of tolerance have become anything but tolerant. They want to silence anyone who does not conform to what they deem "right thinking".

Students on college campuses had better parrot the liberal professors or their grades will suffer. Universities and the mainstream media might as well hang out a sign saying "CONSERVATIVES NEED NOT APPLY!" You'd be ostracized by the feminists if you suggested that abortion should be restricted. You are a homophobe if you think marriage should be strictly between a man and a woman. You are a racist if you think college admission should be based on qualifications only and not on race. Attack people with labels and shut them up. If that doesn't work use other tactics-- lawsuits, threats of boycotts, even bomb threats.

It's all about what kind of country we want. It is clear that the modern day liberal wants a different country. They don't want equal opportunity; they want preferential treatment for some groups. They certainly don't want capitalism; they want socialism. They don't want to protect American sovereignty; they want world government. We Americans who want to preserve individual freedom had better get involved and fight for it.

As the UK drifts to the Left we are falling more & more for the politics of totalitarianism. In the USSR, people were censored and didn't dare speak out. Today in the so-called "free" UK we censor ourselves. A blind person is suddenly "visually handicapped " ( I've been in a wheelchair, I HATED the term " handicapped" ... I was BROKEN, crippled, paralysed ANYTHING but handicapped !)
and if we take the inferences of this book forward soon it will be " wrong " ( THAT word will soon be disallowed ) to say "left" or "right" in case someone gets offended. Part of the process of growing up is that we learn to face adversity and learn from the experience. Po-litical correctness is about forcing everyone to remain a child mentally, cosseted from cradle to grave and living in constant fear of being reported for using the wrong word. WHATEVER HAPPENED TO FREE SPEECH ? This is a timely warning which should be read by anyone wondering " why is it suddenly wrong to use THAT word" ? "Why is it OK to constructively criticise THAT religion but wrong to analyse THAT one " ? ... If those questions bother you ... Read this and understand that it's part of a very long-term plan to destroy many of the values that made Britain Great.

Before I actually start on my opinion of this book I would like to state for the record that I am neither a staunch left or right wing voter, I voted Lib Dem at the last general election mainly because I wanted electoral reform and I support their stance on the welfare system. My political opinions vary depending on the specific issue therefore I am probably best described as a centralist.
I only point this out to pre-emptively counter the oh-so predictable accusations of "right wing apologist" or "right wing fascist". Or the annoying tin-foil-hat obsessive accusations of being involved in some sort of conspiracy to undermine freedom, the rights of the people or the far left cause which sadly have been a common occurrence for me in the past when I've voiced a view that could even vaguely be perceived as being in support of the right (I kid you not).

Tammy Bruce has made a very nice attempt at highlighting the common flaws and utter hypocrisy that, in my view, have become ridiculously common among a minority of the left. Anti fascist's who in many ways are just as fascist as the people they protest against, feminists who call for a female dominant society and scream sexist only when it suits them at that moment (yet keep strangely quiet when it suddenly doesn't suit them). I could go on and on but it probably wouldn't get past the mods since it detracts from reviewing the actual book.

The book is mostly aimed at American politics and therefore doesn't totally apply to UK politics. She superbly highlights several times the concept of "groupthink" which is a subject I've become very interested in recently and have witnessed a great deal over the years (it's a concept that applies to both the left and right wing before people here think I'm solely picking on the left). I also like her criticism of the media and their tendency to fly off the handle and scream isms when there is really no need. Also her criticism of focus groups, such as some gay, racism and feminist focus groups, and their flaws is worthy of praise.

On the downside she seems to be a little too right wing biased at times, she exaggerates on some issues which I believe are not as bad as is made out in this book (although I am looking at this from a UK resident's point of view), she excessively cites examples of Left Wing "fascism" against a Dr Laura (I admit to not really knowing who that is except that apparently she said some things that got misinterpreted and Tammy Bruce is a personal friend) and the whole book has a consistent outraged tone that becomes a bit boring after awhile. Still she's managed to highlight the flaws of an element of the left quite nicely; I don't doubt many of her arguments are up for debate and that is of course up to the reader.

Recommended reading for anyone who's fed up of twisted meanings, shouting opposition down, promoting propaganda and annoying hypocrisy from an area of politics that's supposed to promote equality, free speech and free choice.

As an expose of the power grab and suppression of freedom that lie behind Political Correctness, Multiculturalism, Feminism, Gay Rights, etc., this book is unsurpassed. It is an American book, but is nevertheless invaluable to us here in Britain, as some would argue that the aforementioned movements actually began in America before crossing the Atlantic. To quote a saying, when America sneezes, the rest of us catch a cold. To fully understand what is happening over here, you also need to understand what is happening over there - the arguments are essentially the same, and the threats to reason, common sense, freedom, and democracy are also the same.

Furthermore, this book is readable. There are several British-produced books on this subject, but most of them read as though they had been written by academics, for academics. They are consequently very dry and difficult to follow. Tammy Bruce on the other hand, writes in a simple style that is easy to understand, and she illustrates her arguments with many examples of left-wing activity in America that are forceful, and sometimes downright shocking. This is the first non-fiction book of which I have been able to say - I couldn't put it down.
