Editorial Reviews

Review

"An enjoyable read which will appeal to anyone who has a sense of humour and an ear for the ironic. It captures the essence of teen-speak, especially its glib jibes and prickly put- downs, so well that you feel as if you're eavesdropping. Gray's dialogue is consistently sharp and snappy, and her eclectic mix of characters prove well pitched. What sets her latest release apart from its many competitors in the YA genre is that not only does it have a surprisingly edgy and intelligent narrative, it also offers a group of main characters who are all capable of holding a reader's interest on their own. On this level it makes for a curious delight. " - Book Viral, Editorial Reviews

"A well written teenage romance that reminded me of my own high school days. Jacky Gray showed all the details of the high school experience - the fun, jealousy, ugliness, petty fights, and true friendship. Jacky did not skip out on the details either; each character has their own unique personality that makes them seem so realistic that I felt like I could actually befriend the trio of girls myself. The romance elements fitted perfectly with the plot and were the right balance of lust, love, and friendship. The plot itself was just right for a teenage romance in that it was mostly straightforward and did not detract from the romance of the characters. I personally found myself enjoying the book and wishing that I could have read it when I was in high school! " - Reader's Favourite

"Oh, this gave me all the feels! New Kid in Town gave such a convincing depiction of mercurial teenage relationships and that dreadful sense of hope and fear combined around transforming friendships into relationships when you don't quite dare take the plunge in case your feelings aren't reciprocated. The characters were treasures, both individually and I loved their bantering relationships. This was an awful lot like being a teenager again!" - Katy Haye, Author of the Clockwork War Series

"The characters struck me as very realistic--the sort of girls I would have known when I was in high school. (I related most to Liv.) I loved their conversations and sometimes found myself laughing out loud. I wished I could go back in time and hang out with them! Although this was a fun book, I loved that it tackled things like bullying and sex in teens without being heavy-handed about it--very difficult to do! I'm a huge fan of YA fiction and I love a YA book that can be appreciated by adults too. This definitely falls into that category!" - Annabelle Costa, Author of The Ugly Duckling Series

"Fantastic story! Drama you can't look away from. I was hooked from the first page. I felt like the characters were my friends, and that's what I loved about this book. The girls, Liv, Jude and Kat, who are their own group and seemingly outside of the caste system, lol, make high school bearable. But, of course, there is the drama. You can't have teenagers without drama. And this book nails that, especially when the 'new kid', Ray, comes on the scene. He's hot. And definitely hiding something." - Alice Bell, Author of The Dark Enchantment Series

"It was a very refreshing and interesting read about teens coming of age. Although I am way past my high school years, this book really did a great job of entertaining me and bring me back to those times. I bet it would be quite intriguing for both young and more "seasoned" adults. :) I am absolutely delighted about the decision of the author to include a mysterious disabled character. I think it is something out-of-the box and shows that these people do deserve to be included in our lives - both real and fictional. Can't wait to find out Ray's dark secret!" - Milky, Amazon Reader

"If you're a big fan of the 90s rom-com, 10 Things I Hate About You, (which how could you not be??) then you're probably someone who will really enjoy this book. New Kid is jam-packed with drama (what teenage life isn't?); the dialogue was by far one of my favorite elements of the story and will leave you laughing out loud. When feelings of friendship turn into something more, but you're unsure if the feeling is mutual, New Kid handles the topic beautifully. Despite it being a fun read, there were some also rather serious elements to the story, which contributed to its real-ness and the readers ability to relate." - Heather, Amazon Reader

"The school system may be different and the slang may seem weird on this side of the pond but the teenage angst is the same no matter where in the world you are. These kids don't realize how lucky they are to have such stalwart friends. The interaction of the group is funny, intense and endearing. Wish I had such a group of friends." - Elaigo, Amazon Reader

"Clever, witty, snarky dialogue. This story (and the ones to come) have an interesting group of friends at its core. These teens have a wide range of talents. Their lives are not dull. Very enjoyable read." - Bernadette Cinkoske, Amazon Reader

From the Author

I'm thrilled to finally be publishing this series of books; the first one I ever wrote. These characters were so vibrant and vivid, they accompanied me on every summer in Spain and October half-term in France for several years. Although written over a decade ago, they've been updated to reflect some extremely current issues (such as the way electronic devices are impacting on teaching and learning in schools).

Hope you enjoy spending time with my three girls and their attendant boys - wonder if you'll work out the final pairings! They have an awful lot of fun before they get there, including a school show, a Shakespeare play in Stratford, being sent to Coventry (as in outcast), running away to Coventry to enter a skating competition, performing with a rock band and in a teen-idol competition, and seeing off a nasty bully and a predatory, motorbike-riding gang leader.

Now I've just got to get the next 5 books edited and published so you can share their adventures. Good job I wasn't intending to sleep this year!
