It also worked with other phones we owed as well as an iPod Touch. Then one day my son tried using it and I could hear his phone repeatedly beat as it started to charge and then stopped. Hmmm, still worked with my Nexus 5 but I could have sworn that the power light used to light up the entire time I was charging no longer stayed on.
Tried my wife's phone, same start then stop charging after a few seconds. Tried my iPod Touch and it would start, stop, start, stop, repeatedly.
It appears that if the power draw wasn't sufficient from the device being charged the New Trent Powerpak would decide to shut off it's green LED and go to sleep. Normally a smart thing to do to save power but not good when a device is trying to charge.
Giving it two stars for a good try but given the many other low rated reviews suggests they have a quality issue. In addition New Trent seems to encourage positive reviews by offering people free products in the future in exchange for reviews. Regardless, what started off working great ended up not working properly, fortunately within Amazon's great return policy period so no hassles getting a full refund.
I'd try New Trent products again, the price is right and they have some good ideas, but they need to spend some time finding out why their stuff is failing or DOA.
Update: Last night, right after I wrote the review, the device did it's usual green light when turned on, green light turns off after about 15 secs of charging but after about an hour the device suddenly started blinking red and when I hit the switch on the top it cycled through some colors and blinked red. I stuck in on the charger all night and in the morning it was working properly again. It's like it needed to be discharged completely so some internal controller would power cycle. Now when I plug in a device the green light comes on and stays on. So ... if you suffer the same symptoms I did (green light goes out shortly after you attach a device to charge) find a way to drain the battery completely to the point it starts flashing red, hit the switch on top and then fully charge it. See if it doesn't recover.
I contacted New Trent direct and have been told there is something wrong, it should switch colors, even when very low, in a couple of hours. So something is wrong. I will change to 5 stars, but this is going right back for a new one. I think I will be very happy when it is working. But wanted to post this for other people.
Update: Did receive the new unit. It does take a charge. Blinks the color charge level until it goes solid green. Again this is a very nice form factor, feels good, simple no frills. In a perfect world it would be nice to have it charge via a lightning cable...so I didnt need to bring another cord, but this really is not a big deal.
