“New Work” comprises three new original songs, three old ballads in folk rock mode and one Calypso tune.
“Two Magicians” is Child Ballad #44, for which I’ve composed an original melody. In the story, a lusty blacksmith wants a maid’s virginity. They undergo a series of transformations amounting to a chase.
“Listening In” is a new original song which is a celebration of music in all its forms.
“Jealousy” is an original bluesy tune.
“Wild Rippling Waters” is a cowboy reincarnation of the old Celtic tune “One Morning in May.” A cowboy and a lady have a dalliance, and she wants him to stay, but he’s on his way to Mexico, and she’ll have only his child to remember him by.
“How’re Ya Doin’?” is my wake-up call to the graying members of the hippie generation.
“Mary Ann” is a famous calypso tune composed by Rafael DeLeon, known popularly as Roaring Lion.
“Maid on the Shore” is an old ballad, in which a captain has a maiden kidnapped for his pleasure, but finds himself deceived in turn.
Dean Rathje: voices, guitars, dobro, piano, bass.
