I gave it 4 stars because it's very good, but not a definitive work. For the first time I saw colonial history through the eyes of other human beings, not just as facts listed on a page. I appreciated the British-French mix even though I wasn't expecting it, and all in all it gave me a deeper and more personal understanding of colonial history.
Its too bad that this book isn't lining the shelves of Barnes and Noble as there are plenty of really terrible books there instead - such as the anti-American Howard Zinn reader
This is what a history of colonial America would look like if TMZ handled it.
If the guy had imaginative creativity he could probably write superlative fiction and I'll bet I would like it, but no - he had to play a sorry game with my favorite subject: history.
In the end, a reader should approach this book as an outline, a primer perhaps, that covers a compelling expanse of our past, and take it upon her or himself to fill in the gaps. For those readers who prefer narrative to history, then this book should be enough. It is full of fascinating, fatally flawed characters (and lots and lots of native Americans who like to eat those characters). For readers looking for a more detailed, textured understanding of our founding, this is a decent place to start -- if Quinn's writing style doesn't drive you crazy within the first 12 pages -- because it is organized decently and many highlights are there, but keep in mind that it is only a start.

Definitiv nicht zu empfehlen, wenn man gründlich fundierte historische Fakten sucht.
