forget everything else; i'm serious. Although very dated; Michael Jackson was a superb writer with an enthusiasm for beer that precluded being nasty. Wonderful history, great old pubs and venues which still exist and are veritable beer shrines, terrific memorabilia. Sad that he passed away before the explosion of new breweries but still worth reading as he is the writer who started it all, along with the brewers and members of the AHA who blazed the home and microbrewing trail.

Good Coffee Table Material

This book is really in depth about beer of all types from all places. It is a great book to put on your coffee table and let your guests thumb through it. It would probably also be a good book to just read, although I haven't been through it cover to cover to verify that. The only drawback is that it is a little dated. The beer world has changed significantly since the craft beer revolution, which this predates. Still, there is a wealth of information that is and always will be relevant and interesting.

...Not Bob Klein?

An excellent book, although I'd suggest his "Beer Companion" for a first buy. Ignore ANY review that starsts with "Michael Jackson is not Bob Klein." That's like writing "John Lennon is not Michael Bolton..." Don't buy the hype; Michael Jackson (as he introduces himself, "not the pedorast") is the Man.

Simply the best book on beer ever written

Jackson's informative prose and comprehensive knowledge of beer in all its wondrous variety makes this book a must-have for brewers and beer enthusiasts. Its size and beautiful layout designates it as a coffee table book, but you'll want to keep it out for guests who are enthusiastic about the American microbrewery revolution of the past twenty years, or even better for those who "don't like beer" because they've never drunk a good one. This book will make you want to purchase airline tickets to Europe to visit the breweries and towns Jackson writes so lovingly about.
