“The New Year’s Wish” is a sweet romance. It’s not a complicated story – no sex or violence. This book is a wonderful story for this time of year. It will leave readers smiling. It would make a cute romantic comedy movie.
Now, I need to see what other books this author has written.
Garrett is a single father who’s a workaholic, but when he bumped into Olivia when coming off the elevator earlier he was intrigued with her, but knew she could be trouble. When he was asked to conduct the interview he offered her a position as his assistant since his is on maternity leave.
Even though this story has a steady pace and short, I felt like some details were missing through the story. Though I did find it sweet to see that even Garrett could get flustered and the way he cared for his daughter.
As much as I wish there was a bit more to this story, I felt like it presented itself really well. The plot pulls you in and you can’t do anything, but cheer Olivia on.

Olivia's 25 years old, and she's heading out for her first job interview. It's for a job where she's actually going to have to work for someone. Oh, she's had a job before, but that was when she was running her own catering business. But, since her business has gone under, and her trust fund is just about gone, she really needs the job to support herself and Barney. Barney is a humungus Newfoundland dog, and he's a sweetheart. But, if Olivia's going to get, and keep a job, she's going to have to deal with two employment hurdles right away. One, she's never on time for anything and two, well, she has a big problem answering to anyone.
Olivia's interview is with a law firm, as a receptionist. Since she's already an hour and a half late, her day has already gotten off to a bad start. When Olivia finally arrives at the office, and is getting off the elevator, she literally bumps into the the most gorgeous man, she's ever seen. And, to make matters worse, the coffee she's carrying to the interview, as a peace offering for the person interviewing her, gets dumped all over her. After the man has left, she heads into the law office because, at this point, she believes she's not going to get the job anyway, so she's got nothing to lose. Once she's seated in the interview room, by a snipping, sarcastic assistant, in walks the guy who's set to interview her. Imagine Olivia's horror when she realizes it's the guy from the elevator. He's Garrett Emerson, the vice-president of the company. Garrett is so struck by Olivia's beauty he can't take his eyes off her. It's not her physical beauty he's so much thinking about, but the inner beauty she radiates. His feelings are so strong, and out of control, he has the sudden urge to reach out and tuck her hair back behind her ear, and he keeps imagining how her hair would look up, and then down. To hopefully put a stop to the wondering thoughts he's having about her, and to put some distance between them, he moves behind his desk. Even though he's not prepared to take a relationship with her further, he also knows he can't just let Olivia leave his office and disappear, so he does the only thing he can do, he offers her a job.
After the interview, when Olivia's in the washroom, two women enter and one states Olivia's a thorn in her side because Garret's given Olivia the job he was supposed to give her. This job was supposed to be the woman's chance to get her hands on Garrett, and be Mrs. Garrett Emerson by New Years Eve. But she's not too worried, she says, because she believes Olivia will be gone within a month. Olivia's reaction is to laugh to herself and say, she doesn't think so because she isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Now the fun is on as to how Olivia takes control of her own plans, which is to save enough money to have her own business going by New Years. But life has a way of throwing curve balls in your way, and that definitely happens to Olivia. Have fun reading, ladies. You're going to love this book, as I did.
Olivia is the kind of soul that you just want to give her a hug and tell her it’s all going to be okay, thinking in the back of your mind that you just lied to this sweet thing.
Garret is a hard working, single dad. He’s true love is his daughter and she is the main priority in his life. But a guy’s gotta pay the bills so his work at Harris & Harris is important to him and time consuming. When he almost collides with the young woman he will be interviewing for the assistant position, his day just might be looking up. He’s attracted to Olivia, even if she’s a bumbling, can’t tell time or get anywhere when she should, and has no clue how to do her job. Still – he likes her and maybe there is a job that Olivia can do perfectly.
I liked The New Year’s Wish… I just never really connected to the characters. It’s a novella, so there isn’t a lot of time to make me care about this couple’s love life. And while I enjoyed the quirky, accident prone Olivia (up to a point), and perhaps lusted a bit over the handsome Garrett… I simply did not care if they got their happy ever after or not mainly because Olivia was over the top in her scatteredness (if that is even a word). So, while I liked the basic story, it still got a 3 star rating from me (which still equates to an I Liked It) because I could not get engaged on any level with this couple. That is on me, not the author. And I acknowledge that not every story is going to be a perfect fit. If you’re looking for a totally light hearted and quick holiday story then this one might be exactly what you’re looking for.
*I received an e-ARC of The New Year’s Wish from the publisher and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. That does not change what I think of this novel.*
