There were also some great tips for budgeting and it's nice for those new to NYC to understand which tourist attractions are overrated and which are worth braving the crowds and high ticket prices. The contributors were dead on with suggestions like seeing the High Line Park and perhaps skipping Times Square. I also really enjoyed some of the quirkier suggestions such as which Russian clubs to hit, dive bars to visit or drag shows to catch! I had no idea there was a bar in NYC with prosecco on tap (amazing). NYC is so awesome because it's crazy and wonderful, so these types of recommendations are lots of fun.
I was surprised to see the book not only included suggestions for Manhattan, but also Queens, Brooklyn and the Bronx. I don't know Queens very well and am now really excited to try out some of the spots there during my next visit, especially some of the restaurants.
As 10 different locals contribute to the guide, I found myself drawn to the people that had similar interests as myself and really appreciated some of their suggestions. If you don't have a trip planned to NYC anytime soon, this guide will surely inspire you to get there. Or maybe even move there! It would also make a great gift for someone you know who may have a trip planned to NYC or even a local that already lives there that may appreciate some fun insight to their home city.
The author describes this as a supplement to your other major guidebook, since it touches on many major attractions but is really a means to find the city’s hidden gems.
And find those gems it does. This book is formatted around interviewing 10 locals from diverse walks of life: architects, fashionistas, lawyers, actresses, historical preservationists. In the interviews, they reveal their favorite parks, restaurants, bars, museums, and activities, what to do and what to avoid. Though they offer different answers, they share a passion for their city that is contagious.
There is something for everyone here, whether you’re a foodie, an outdoorsy person, or an art fiend on a tight budget. Food recommendations include Uzbeck and Ukrainian cuisine, while the budget tips are extremely handy. There are recommendations for day trips, roads less traveled, bike options, and wild night out venues. I wish I’d had this on my last trip to New York, as this covers some of the neighborhoods I feel most guides skip. Also, because it interviews 10 people with different tastes, interests, and backgrounds, you can better gauge what might be of interest to you personally.
This is a concise and well-conceived guide that invites you to fall in love with New York--the way the locals have.
