New York in the Forties Paperback – April 1, 1978

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 50 ratings

This is one of the finest in-depth photographic records of New York City that has ever been published. In this volume Andreas Feininger captures New York in her "glorious" years. You'll see New York as the leader in commerce, industry and shipping, the place where America's most skilled and talented came to succeed.
Included is almost every aspect of city life from the eerie shots of New York during the "dimout" to the bright lights of 42nd Street. You'll see buildings that look much the same and sights that have vastly changed. The Flatiron Building, Rockefeller Center, the Singer Building, tattoo parlors, clean city streets, 42nd Street with no pornographic movies. You'll see the
Normandie in her heyday, the Queen Mary, and New York as one of the greatest port towns with 771 miles of bustling waterfront activity. You'll see Harlem nightclub at 135th Street, the Louis-Walcott fight at Madison Square Garden, the glittering audience at the old Met; Fifth Avenue during the blizzard of '47; horse-drawn vehicles, the els, the last decade of the street car; the Lower East Side poultry markets and frenzied activity at the Fulton Fish Market; Bowery flophouses; the skyscraper race; incredible views made of the stair-step constructions of skyscrapers; the Brooklyn Bridge, Chinatown, Coney Island, Yorkville, and more.
One hundred and sixty two photographs show a multitude of facets of New York in the 1940s, the decade during which the city flourished and grew with incredible activity. The interesting, factual captions by John von Hartz convey a clear picture of what living in New York was like, giving us a background and explaining the problems, excitement, and changes people faced.
Andreas Feininger brings to this volume an enormous reputation in the field of photography. A former staff photographer of Life magazine, author of several photography texts, and compiler of volumes of his own photographs, Mr. Feininger has personally supervised the publication of this collection of his famous photographs of New York City. While some of these photos have been seen in other books, never before have so many of them been made available in one volume.

The real Big Apple
An impressive 162 photographs from a master photojournalist which really capture the feel of the city without seeming too nostalgic. What I love about this book is the straightforward way these photos present an amazing amount of detail. Feininger once said "This world is full of things the eye doesn't see. The camera can see more and ten times better". All these photos reflect that point-of-view beautifully. You just have to flip quickly through the book to realize how comprehensive the selection is: Wall Street business area; the waterfront; Mid-town skyscrapers; Times Square; stations; bridges; parks; the El; customers looking in shops; New Yorker's going about their business; the city at night and Feininger's trade-mark: the telephoto lens landscape shot. The book starts with one of these Manhattan photos, taken fourteen miles away in New Jersey. Another thing that lifts the title out of the usual photo book format are the very detailed captions to most of the photos.Dover are to be congratulated on producing a lovely book for the price though I find it rather frustrating that the photos are only printed in a 133 screen. I recently bought a Andreas Feininger: That's Photography monograph with the photos printed as 200+ screen duotones, it includes many of these New York photos and they look just stunning.***SEE SOME INSIDE PAGES by clicking 'customer images' under the cover.

This book is not just great history, it is also great art; and for those of us who have had the good fortune to have lived in this city for some years, it is also personal history, a biography of ourselves. Feininger shows brilliantly the tension that exists in New York between humanity and modernity, between glitter and true human feelings. To me this seems almost Hopperesque, although with less stringency. Andreas Feininger is not unlike his father a master in the portrayal of affectionate structures.

Great pictures and love it because I was there. Especially loved that the 1947 snowstorm was shown. I got stuck on a doubledecker 5th Avenue bus and wound up walking over the 59th Street Bridge.Luckily I was young and found it an adventure!

(Yes, they were called doubledeck buses!)

5.0 out of 5 stars Feininger-New York in the Forties

At the back end of the forties/early fifties, when i was learning about photography I saw a photo of the Empire State building photographed from a distance of 8 miles.
In 2003 we visited New york, our one and only visit to the US.
Of course, we went to the top of the iconic building and it revived memories.
I bought the book on my return to the UK.
The first photo in the book is that impression-making photo by Andreas Feininger.
That photo taught me more about the use of long focus lenses than anything else I have seen.
The other 161 photos are also excellent. Buy the Book, recommended!

Ein wirklich historisches Buch! Sehr gute Bilder aus den 1940er Jahren und Erklärungen, wie sich New York von 1940 bis Ende 1970 verändert hat.

My passion for New York City continues, as if it would ever stop. This superb book contains 162 of Feininger's finest New York City shots. It's full of beautiful shots - very contrasting in its tones and shows a byegone New York, characterful and exciting, that is almost akin to a film set. The book is great value too. A work of art.
