This, arguably Hep's third collection of New York small bands (the other two are dedicated to Harlem black bands), is absolutely essential fare, if only for the first four tracks, by Gene Gifford and his Orchestra. The stars of the proceedings are Gifford as composer and arranger of all four titles (and they are as far removed from his Casa Loma work as possible), Wingy Manone as a soulful and completely convincing blues singer (no vocal antics or clowning), a stupendous Matty Matlock on clarinet (his solo on "Squareface" is of an almost unparalleled understated beauty à la Irving Fazola, but more than a year before Faz made his recording debut with Ben Pollack), and Bunny Berigan in absolute top form (his opening statement and solo on "Nothin'But the Blues" are devastating proof of his stature as the greatest trumpeter of the Thirties and perhaps even one of the greatest of all time; the beauty of tone, the majestic sweep of his dare-devil leaps into the highest register and the plunge to the lowest-to-one note on the instrument within the space of just twelve bars is something that should be compulsory material for any aspiring trumpeter, or indeed jazz musician). Bud Freeman and Dick McDonough also provide solos of some interest, but it is these four gentlemen that take the biscuit. (Freeman recalled the session some fifty years later and said it was one of the most memorable session of his life. Alternate takes were cut just for fun.Read more ›

This is the real deal ! I LOVE this cd. Not only does it have a great vintage feel, it has a nice New Orleans jazz sound to some of the songs. I listen to this cd every day since I ordered it. I highly recommend. These 1930's songs are really fantastic.
