Purchase options and add-ons
The is the most ingenious collection of New Yorker cartoons published in book form, The New Yorker Encyclopedia of Cartoons is a prodigious, slip-cased, two-volume, 1,600-page A-to-Z curation of cartoons from the magazine from 1924 to the present. Mankoff -- for two decades the cartoon editor of the New Yorker -- organizes nearly 3,000 cartoons into more than 250 categories of recurring New Yorker themes and visual tropes, including cartoons on banana peels, meeting St. Peter, being stranded on a desert island, snowmen, lion tamers, Adam and Eve, the Grim Reaper, and dogs, of course. The result is hilarious and Mankoff's commentary throughout adds both depth and whimsy. The collection also includes a foreword by New Yorker editor David Remnick. This is stunning gift for the millions of New Yorker readersand anyone looking for some humor in the evolution of social commentary.

Editorial Reviews
Review
"Bob Mankoff's brilliant reorganization of nearly 100 years of New Yorker cartoons is a can't-miss. Using the thematic categorization approach that made his Cartoon Bank such a treat, this "encyclopedia" divides the entries into the weirdly recurring tropes like "Beached Whales," "Humpty Dumpty," "Nudism," "Office Life," and of course, meeting "Saint Peter."
Mankoff adds come color commentary to tease out common themes throughout. The cartoons themselves are lovingly reprinted in gloriously oversized formats you can fall into. Of course, at 15 pounds this two-volume behemoth is a grand impractical production that needs a table of its own."―Folio

Fantastic, large in size (2 huge tomes), excellent paper (joy to flip pages) … and The New Yorker cartoons, 3000 of them all personally selected by Mr. Mankoff! Trifecta!
The book isn't formatted to display cleanly on my iPhone, but that's not a huge problem. I'd prefer one cartoon per page because when they try to stuff two on a page the caption for the second often gets pushed onto the next page. Not the end of the world, but kind of sloppy.
The narrative between sections is often funny and always informative. Makes me notice things I'd never see on my own.
Highly recommended.
Great cartoons. Lots of irony, sarcasm and all the good wit that makes me laugh.
Absolutely loved it

This large two-volume collection is arranged by topic, and I am sure "list enthusiasts" like Umberto Eco would find the heterogeneous topic list itself hilarious. The collection draws upon many decades of archives (the magazine was established in 1925), but a large number are from our current century. Therefore I appreciate that the date and the cartoonist's name is mentioned at the bottom of each page, especially in those glimpses of a world that no longer exists. For example, jokes about technology get old very fast, and there is even a cartoon about that, where a dog complains about missing the old days when you could go on the internet and nobody knew you were a dog.
I would warn buyers that the volumes themselves are large and heavy, presented in a smart red box. Due to the weight of the two tomes together, it's probably not a good idea to put this on a high shelf, unless you are hoping for someone to have an accident. They are substantial hard-backed "coffee table" books, rather than something you might bring on holiday. Good quality paper stock and printing lend a bit of a luxury feel to a medium which is generally rather ephemeral.
But my main intention buying this item was to get a good laugh, and while a few of the cartoons don't quite hit my funny bone, The New Yorker Encyclopedia of Cartoons manages to generate giggles and/or guffaws on almost every page. No regrets.
