Newfangled is a fictional book set in Southern California during the fall/winter semester of 2015. Olive is a twelve year old girl that transfers to a public school after the private Christian school she goes to closes down. Facing a crowd of kids that already know each other, she struggles with choosing which crowd to hang with: with Tracey and Trish, who have befriend her but may not be the nicest, or with the Mashables, a small group of nerdy kids that seem to be nice. Struggling also with problems with her friends from church and her own growing questions about her faith, she braves 7th grade.
The close-knit family portrayed in Newfangled was really refreshing as they faced normal everyday problems together. Olive’s mom stood out vividly with effort to spend time with Olive despite her busy schedule as a photographer. Aunt Barb was great too
Overall, Newfangled was an enjoyable read with some great thoughts for Christian girl that are presented in a non-preachy way.
This book is really good for all tweens. It really expresses the struggles that at tween can go through as they head into junior high.
All the characters were really cool. I can’t really pick a favorite character because they all were great.
Kristin Spencer is a good author. I hope to read her next books some time! Just so you know, this is another book in this series. It is called Flummoxed.
The cover is really creative. I love the “camera” type theme. (Olive’s mom is a photograph.) I thought that was really cool. This cover definitely deserves 5 stars.
Now, I am going to give this book 4 stars. There were only a few minimal things that I didn’t like. But, even with those, this book is worth the read for tweens!
I appreciate that the work was proofed well. ( the spelling , etc.)
I would recommend this book to any one. I started reading YA books when I had difficulty finding a clean book to read.
Newfangled is an ideal read for elementary through early high school students. We need more quality faith-based fiction like this for our youth!
