I waited up all night for this release, or maybe I should say I waited all year for the other shoe to fall. There is no filler in this "EP"; in fact, it could stand alone as an album that overshadows its parent. I'd rather have these 7 songs than a "full" album and it's infinitely worth the price to get the whole thing, even though I was initially only interested in the 10-minute version of "Love is Lost" that's the centerpiece-masterpiece. I even prefer this version of "I'd Rather Be High" as well. As I mention in my review of "God Bless The Girl", I listened to this album over and over for hours, and it's easily the best material he's made this century IMHO, if you weigh it as 7 straight classics in a single string. If you're a long-time fan, and you appreciate how much mental and spiritual stimulation the albums "Ziggy Stardust", "Aladdin Sane", "Station To Station", "Scary Monsters" and "Let's Dance" held in their grooves, you'll fall in love with this "EP" like I did. Make sure you listen uninterrupted for the all-important first impression and you'll see what I mean.

The centerpiece of this album is “Love Is Lost (Hello Steve Reich Mix by James Murphy for the DFA).” “Love is Lost” was, in my opinion, the best track on Next Day, harkening back to the classic Bowie sound of Let’s Dance. Remixes can go one of two ways, they enhance the original track or they ruin it. James Murphy’s (of LCD Soundsystem)remix clearly enhances “Love is Lost.” Including a techno dance beat while retaining the original sound and energy of the original, while adding a nice sprinkle of “Ashes to Ashes” (yep, you read it right, “Ashes to Ashes”). The publishers of the album have smartly made the “Love is Lost” remix an album only track.

That’s not to say there is nothing else to recommend here. “Atomica,” “The Informer,” “Like a Rocket Man,” “Born in a UFO,” and “God Bless the Girl” are new tracks which are not available on the “Next Day” or the deluxe edition. Of these, “The Informer” is one of the weaker new tracks and “God Bless the Girl”(which was previously only available on the Japanese version of the Next Day) is one of the best. There is also an additional remix of “I’d Rather Be High.”

I heard The Next Day a few months ago. I thought it was OK, certainly the best Bowie effort since Scary Monsters or Let's Dance.

I was not prompted to buy it until the excellent James Murphy remix of Love Is Lost got played on the radio a few weeks ago. It was worth the price just for the extra CD. I would go so far as to place it with Side 1 of Low, which has been a firm favorite since I bought it in 1977.

The original The Next Day plus an EXTRA disc of 4 new studio tracks plus three tracks from the original Deluxe edition of The Next Day PLUS a bonus track ("God Bless The Girl") and 2 new re-mixes including "Lost In Love", a 10 plus minute epic (a MUST listen!)...The DVD contains the four music videos previously released online but seem better in total...This is the box set to get if you do not have The Next Day already and even if you do it is like buying a whole new album anyway. Either way, great to hear the Chameleon again!!!

On January 8, 2013, David Bowie's 66th birthday, Bowie stunned his fans and the world's music media by releasing a brand-new single on iTunes, Where Are We Now, hereby ending a ten-year hiatus that most fans and critics by then considered to be a quietly self-imposed retirement. And then, approximately two months later, Bowie released The Next Day, his first new album since 2003's solid Reality. Streamed in its entirety on iTunes days before its official release, the album received great critical acclaim and reached No. 1 in the U.K., as well as No. 2 in the U.S., Canada and Australia.

Frankly, it's beyond me why any longtime fans would be disappointed with The Next Day; it's an intriguing and frequently exhilarating album and was - quite rightly - hailed by many critics as Bowie's strongest, most satisfying album since the late `70s/early `80s (even if 2004's Heathen is a close contender).

I listened to track samples online and it sounded like weak noise to me. However, based on reviews in the press and being a little desperate to find a gift for my husband, I bought it anyway. On our (high-end) stereo, the first listen was already light-years better than the mp3 versions (which, even though I am now dependent on this album, still do not have the power to hold me the way it does on a stereo). By the third listen, I realized it was too late to turn back - I was addicted. It has been months now. For example, in half-sleep at night Valentine's Day runs through my head (better than waking up thinking about work, at least). Flashes of the videos come to me unbidden. I have to force myself to occasionally listen to other music. This yearning, haunting album stops you just short of fulfillment, keeping you coming back for more, hoping that this time...

I purchased the original release version Feb. 2013. I jumped at the chance to get the extra tracks because it took Bowie sooooo long to release anything. The extra tracks were worth the get but now I'm stuck with the original. I hate when they do that..
