Being fifteen is just not an easy job. Especially for the socially awkward. And Hadley fitted right into that category. Sometimes it was the only place she felt she fitted. When her best and only friend Lexi moves away, Hadley is certain that her future suddenly turned bleaker than ever, if that was possible. An invitation to spend the summer with her grandparents seemed the best solution for her. Hadley entertained hopes of befriending Simone Hendrickson, her grandparent's movie star neighbor. Of course, she thought, that will never happen. Things like that never happened to her, but it was fun to imagine. So, Hadley is surprised when Simone actually recognizes her as a companion, even though it is obvious that it is a rebound situation. Simone is constantly at odds with Morgan and Pilar, neither of whom give Hadley the time of day. It seems that Hadley is doomed to be the "loser," no matter where she lives.

Next Door to a Star by Krysten Lindsay Hager is a heart wrenching tale of a young girl growing into her teen years. Hadley is faced with the reality of the fickleness of young girls while also learning the truth of the old adage of "you can't judge a book by its cover." Caught in a maze of jealousy, painful gossip, and the status of brand name importance, Hager's main character is representative of every teenage girl. The author really nailed the reality of a young girl's early high school years. I think this is a valuable read for girls ages 12-18.

Do NOT start this book at night, otherwise you will get no sleep. I stayed up so late reading this I drifted off to sleep holding my tablet. Got woke up when I dropped it and finished it. I did not want to put it down especially when I was only 3 chapters from the end.

This story really reminds you of what it is like to be in high school and middle school. A lot of times as we get older we tend to forget the struggles and only remember the good. Reading this book had me going, "Oh I had a friend like that." Krysten Hager certainly knows how to write a wonderful story with believable characters.

I will be buying a copy for my daughter who is a sophmore.

Hadley Daniels already feels invisible in her school, and after her best friend moves, she finds herself feeling all alone among the crowds and cliques. Thankfully, her plans for summer look bright. They will be spent with her grandparents in Grand Haven, Michigan, staying next door to the popular teenage star Simone Hendrickson. Hadley envisions getting closer to Simone, and they do become friends. However, in her excitement, she begins to neglect her other friend, Charlotte. Then there is Nick Jenkins, the boy that she is crushing on. Unfortunately, he believes some rumors and puts their budding relationship on the back burner. When Hadley’s family decides to move to town, she is positive that the upcoming school year will be the best ever. Who knows what other famous people she will encounter. Could it include her celebrity crush, Jack Brogger? Will she finally have a year to look forward to, which will include best friends, a boyfriend, and a social life?

Who hasn’t dreamed of living next door to a celebrity, hanging out with them, and actually being able to call them a friend? I know I would love that, and I’m an adult! That excitement would only be magnified for a teenager. Hager totally nails teen drama and angst, complete with cliques, first loves, first kisses, and all the associated gossip with that age group. There are a number of humorous scenes, and one in particular involving self-tanners. Unfortunately, that one may be relatable for many readers. I particularly enjoyed Hadley’s grandparents, who are well-meaning but lovably clueless at times. Starting over is tough for anyone, and especially tough for teenage girls. Hager has the ability to transport the reader back in time, and in this case, will have them envisioning what their teenage years would have been like if they had been living next door to a star.

Reading "Next Door to A Star" took me back to those middle and junior high school years (the lets just go from elementary to high school memories). I was unsure of societal ranking; much less what was supposed to be "cool" or not. I remember wanting to stay home with my books and enjoy the rest of my life away from people and their intentions.

I had flashbacks of some of those intentions while reading. We meet the cool, popular girls who everyone had an opinion about, including which one we'd want to be, which one we'd want to be friends with and which one we're still trying to forget to this day. There is the usual cattiness, teenage backstabbing and the are-we-friends-or-aren't-we moments that most (if not all) adolescent girls go through. And oh! The boy crushes of yesteryears. Author Krysten Lindsay Hager nails it.

I loved Hadley. I love her unsure "sureness" and how she proccessed her friendships, her family and the cute boy down the street. I wish I had known someone like her during those years I was "left to fend for myself." I was more like shy, studios book nerd Charlotte who kept her head down and let the world "sort itself out."

And yes, as the Charlotte of the group, I would have seen that Hadley made mistakes. We've all be there and had questionable choices at some point. But she's still such a good character, a great voice and a wonderful FRIEND, overall.

I will definitely keep this book in mind while Christmas shopping for my pre-teen and teenage nieces. Next door to a star took me back to some of those unfortunate, uncomfortable adolescent/teenage period but I was grateful for those moments.

This book really, truly brought me right back to my middle school and high school years in the best possible way. I remember that time being so hard and so confusing to navigate. This book reminds you that everyone has their own insecurities and everyone goes through the same difficult times and that even when you feel alone, you're not. It is such an important message for teen girls today that isn't always captured as sentimentally and wonderfully as it is in this book. The author is so completely able to make you feel like part of the story! I honestly couldn't stop reading this.

Next Door To A Star follows Hadley Daniels, a teenager who feels an outcast at school & is a bit of a loner. She does however have one friend, who sadly moves away leaving Hadley totally lost.

Hadley goes to spend the summer with her grandparents, who are totally loveable & sweet, but have no idea about teenage girls. The one saving grace is that they live next door to Simone Hendrickson. A young tv star who brings Hadley into her circle of friends. Hadley also meets & falls for a boy Nick Jenkins. When her parents decide to relocate to Grand Haven to be near her grandparents She really believes her life is changing for the better, but some people have other ideas.

This is a true coming of age story, full of painful teenage angst, first love, jealousy & heartbreak, and I really enjoyed seeing Hayden grow up throughout this book.

The author expertly describes Hayden's feelings & the situations she gets herself into. So much so that you really empathise with Hayden.
