About the Author
CW Browning was writing before she could spell. Making up stories in the backyard with her childhood best friend, imagination ran wild from the very beginning. When she moved to New Jersey from Kansas at the age of seven, those tales became written words as she adjusted to life on the East Coast. Her first full-length novel was printed out on a dot-matrix printer at the age of eight. Through the years, the writing continued as an enjoyable past-time while she pursued other avenues of interest, attending Rutgers University and studying History. In time, though, it became apparent where her heart truly lie. CW still makes up stories in her backyard, but now she crafts them for her readers to enjoy. She makes her home in Southern New Jersey, where she loves to grill organic steak and sip red wine on the patio.

Only because I actually read it completely through am I able to give this book a four-star rating. I should have known better than to buy into it as being a Action Thriller, in fact I found it quite limited in action, more the Chick Flick type of book that I try to avoid. Too much unrequited love and sexual tension for a true action thriller, concentrating too much, in my opinion, on that instead of the action I was hoping to be reading about. Cast with a woman assassin, terrorists, and opposing sides after the same quarry, it was presented as much more than I found to be in the book. Sorry, but this is why I seem to avoid Lady writers when it comes to action thrillers. Too much concentration on the "Hunk" and the " alluring sexuality " of the characters for my taste. Am I sexist pig? Probably to some of you, but I am an avid reader like the rest of you and I am entitled to my opinion.

First of all, how ignorant is this author? An acre is not a linear measure, so it makes no sense at all to say that something is so many acres from something else, which this author does at least twice. Second, a Camaro is not a "small sports car", as this author seems to believe. Third, there IS a difference between "then" and "than". Finally, the author seems to have absolutely no idea how to use an apostrophe to create a possessive.
Next, this author could really use a thesaurus. Every third reply is listed as a "retort". It got so bad that I had Kindle count them. There are 93 occurrences of "retort" in this book, and most of them clearly demonstrate that the author doesn't know the meaning of "retort".
It's a great plot with pretty interesting characters, but at 52%, I can no longer get past the awful writing and/or editing. "Amateurish" is way too kind. I want to finish it, but it's just too childishly written

There were so many things about this book that didn't make a whole lot of sense. The main character is an assassin who's spent the past ten years as a loner and yet the minute she gets back to her hometown (on an assignment no less) she immediately calls up a bunch of old friends and wants to catch up... but then is standoffish whenever she's with them and doesn't seem to want to be there in the first place. She's trying to quietly hunt a terrorist that Homeland Security also goes around and announces to local law enforcement agencies? Overall it felt like this story was trying to be both a spy thriller and a Hallmark "returning home to see what's changed" story, and didn't accomplish either one particularly well because the other narrative kept getting in the way. This one just was a little to unbelievable for me.

Since this is my first book of this author, I didn't know what to expect but was in for a wonderful surprise when I started to read.
The element of suspense is built up from the word go and continues through the book. The protagonist Alina has a measure of uncertainty and mystery surrounding her when she returns to her New Jersey town after 10 years and meets with her friends Angela and Stephanie. Both her friends sense the difference in their friend, her acquired strength and toughness. Stephanie, an FBI agent perceives Alina's smart ways of checking the various aspects of a crime scene in a homicide. Alina's
Ex, now an FBI agent adds to the confusion and the whole situation is further complicated by the arrival of Damon, an erstwhile friend of Alina from her boot camp days.
The complexities and dilemmas of all the different settings, getting rid of the enemies of the country are resolved in such a beautiful way that one has to read the book to understand and enjoy the smooth and easy flowing narrative with well etched and captivated characters.
It was a thoroughly enjoyable reading experience and there was enough of edginess to arouse my curiosity to read the next book. Thank you for an extremely interesting series of books, Ms. Browning.

I was really expecting something more, especially having read some of the reviews. For me, there was just way too much telling me how good she was and it took up to about 95% of the book for anything to happen. Also, this person, Alina who whenever she walks into a crowded bar or restaurant, people just naturally sense her and move aside, waitresses just magically appear? Too much. The so-called climatic end when she gets her terrorist target, who is hiding before he starts his whatever he was going to do and hangs around during a gun fight? Really?? I was hoping for so much more but doubt I want more of the same in future books.

After failing an assasination attempt, a government assassin disappears for 2 years. When the missed target appears she is brought back in to finish the job. Unfortunately for her she has to return to her old home town and see old friends to get the job done. Complications arise and another nemesis gets involved as everything becomes a mess. Who can she trust, what can she tell them and will she get the job done ? An exceptional cast of characters, non stop action and a very well written story line makes this book impossible to put down. A must read !

This book is like a "Chinese Fire Drill" - lots of (sort-of) action but it goes nowhere. I had to stop at 20% No doubt that Alina is some sort of super agent - but by 20% we STILL don't know what she is or does, and we barely know about her good friends. One is FBI I think, but it is never made clear. There was little plot or character development other than Alina has a pet hawk. Perhaps development comes throughout the book? Maybe her job is so secret even the readers can't know about it? Whatever, not for me.

Good Characters But Lacks Pace
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 27, 2019Verified Purchase
A very difficult book to review, why well I enjoyed some things, but it did lack action and suspense, the tension, gripping action.
Firstly I love action thrillers, my favourite genre and read some great authors and was looking forward to this first in the series, an action thriller with a female assassin...
Story...Alina Maschik was one of the best. She never missed. Yet, two years ago in Cairo, she missed her shot at one of the world’s most wanted terrorists. Now, he’s back. This time, he’s on US soil.
Given the opportunity to redeem herself, Alina’s objective is simple: find the terrorist and complete her mission. But when the target leads her back to her hometown in New Jersey, the situation is anything but simple. Confronted with old girlfriends, her ex-fiancé and the Jersey mob, Alina must face her past as she races against an invisible clock.
But as bodies start to pile up, a cunning and invisible assassin threatens to destroy everything she holds close. Accustomed to working alone, Alina must now rely on old loyalties and new partnerships to help her defeat this new threat, and save the lives of thousands of Americans, without failing a second time.
Yes everything is in place , great lead character,, great character in Hawk, loved Raven... Story good, friends good, but our action hero spent 70% to 80% of her life in a computer room in a basement of a house. I know the importance of created characters for a new series, their personality, and the better you know them the more you enjoy the book.
When the lead character Viper is heading to perform her duties, we are 90% to 93 % in the book, this is late. Not too many surprises or shocks, yes great relationship built throughout the book with Viper and Hawk.
I am sure this series will get better, as you know the characters, but sadly was let down with the pace of this book.
Really 3.5 stars for me. An honest review.

Rubbish. I cannot how this book got so many stars. Waste of money and wish I was entitled to a refund.
Started well but then became just utter nonesense. Binned it at 30%.
How there are six books in the series is beyond my comprehension.

I read most of this book on holiday, and have just finished it. There's an intriguing main character and a good plot. We don't get all the details of the "Why" it's come about, but I'm sure that will come out later in the series.
