Unable to connect to Comcast. Spent hours with Comcast tech support. Modem is cycling but does not lock a steady internet signal. Not sure if they are able to support this model as they claim.

Installed this beauty over the weekend replacing the new Linksys flagship AC1900 with the Puma Chipset. I have heard about the Puma Chipset being problematic and I can confirm that first hand. The Arris has the new Broadcom Chipset, now I'm Broadcom chipset fan. This modem is significantly smaller than your traditional modem but packs some power. The photos below show the standard size modem sitting next to the new Surfboard.

We have Spectrum 300/20 and I'm getting 290/23 wirelessly using 3 Velop nodes and the signal has not dropped a single time. This one should be good for the long haul. Thank You, Arris!

P.S. This is a modem only and does not have built-in wireless. It has one job and it does that job very well...

Sept. 29th - 3-month update. Still working flawlessly and my connection has not dropped one single time. Never have I gone 3 months without a single drop. Final report: I don’t need to worry about WiFi anymore. Thank You, Arris!

Dec 22nd - 6-month update. Still going strong and not a single solitary dropped connection for 6 straight months now. Usually, Time Warner drops the ball every few months but this has been a very good run. I am very happy with the new ARRIS 3.1 and my WiFi worries are over... The jury is out and it's all good news!

Mar 3/2018: After reading numerous other reviews I have noticed that the modem does run a bit warm to the touch right on top and other reviewers noticed packet loss during long heavy use. Nothing I was ever concerned with but since I obsess over having awesome Wifi I decided to add a fan to the side of the modem and now it's at room temp 24/7. I can't say if it helps performance or not but cooler is better and I feel better knowing my awesome new modem is comfortably cool. I'll add a couple of photos with the fan on it below. Keep in mind this is much smaller than your traditional modem 5" x 5" exactly. I attached a 4" x 4" fan on the side that sucks air through the unit. The whole unit is cool to the touch under any usage conditions now. Speed tests are all very strong now but I've been tweaking other things so I can't say if the "cooling" actually helps with speed, it sure can't hurt!

There is a problem with comcast!!!you always get %20 more than your speed but with this one you won’t. Arris and comcast aware of the problem but no fix yet as of january 2018. No problem if you are getting gig tier internet but if you are getting slower speeds than go with another modem. Doc 3.1 slows you down exactly %20 with this modem. You can read more if you google.
For example if you are on a 150 down 20 up tier you get provision of %20 more so you get 180 down and 24 down with docsis3.0 but with sb8200 i only get what i provisoned for which is 150 down not 180 down. So i think it is a big difference to lose. Know more i dig more i read they know the issue for at least 8 months and neither arris nor comcast haven’t fixed this problem. Especially after puma chipset problems with arris in the past now this i am done.

For anyone purchasing this modem to "future proof" your hardware against expected multi-gigabit speed offerings of cable ISPs, be warned: This modem only comes with 1 gigabit speed ethernet ports on the back, NOT 10 gigabit ethernet!

Now, this modem has two 1 gigabit ports on the back of it. In the future, in theory, when your cable ISP starts offering an internet package that delivers more than 1 GBPS, you should be able to go out and purchase a home router that accepts multiple ethernet jack inputs from your cable modem, and will do "port bonding" to give you extra speed. This means, this modem is theoretically capable of a maximum of 2 GBPS speed. Note that these routers do not exist yet as home editions, they are currently only available as very expensive "enterprise" (large business) offerings.

However: if you are looking for a future proof multi-gigabit solutions, there are cheaper and (theoretically) faster solutions. As of this writing, Motorola is selling a DOCSIS 3.1 modem with FOUR 1 gigabit ethernet ports on the back, for $30 less than this modem! That means you could get 4 GBPS from the Motorola offering, with a compatible sold-in-the-future home router that supports port bonding.

I have to say I was shocked and dismayed to discover the cable modem manufacturers are cheaping out, and not providing a 10 gigabit ethernet port on the back of their modems, allowing for the theoretical maximum speed that DOCSIS 3.1 boasts to be achievable. So, you may want to either hold off and get a much cheaper DOCSIS 3.0 modem, or look around for other 3.1 modems that have more ports on the back of them for more speed in the future. (Color me surprised as well to discover that Motorola continues to make and sell modems... after they sold their cable modem business to Arris...)
