The book is organized into three parts: The Foundations of Personal Presence, The Foundations of Team Presence, and The Foundations of Organizational Presence. Additionally, material including in the appendix can be extremely useful. Personally, I love the "Create Your Executive Success Plan (ESP)" presented in Appendix A. Throughout the book Scott includes "Coachable Moments" and "Data Points," the latter drawn from research conducted by The Eblin Group.
I like easy to remember abbreviations and Scott includes a number that I found helpful including: GPS (goals planning system), GAP (from the work of Peterson and Hicks - Goals, Abilities, Perceptions), William Bridges' 4 Ps (purpose, picture, plan, and part to play), and more.
I was surprised by one of the "2-Star" reviews that suggested disappointment when looking for a book"...that would help new and emerging managers and executives with their transitions into their new roles." My impression is that the book includes an abundance of content that is extremely practical and will help with the transition to the executive level. Because of the usefulness of the book I plan to strongly recommend "The Next Level" colleagues delivering executive development programs and to those working for promotions to the executive level.

Author, It's Not As Bad As It Seems
Being an executive brings new set of challenges which the newly appointed executive probably never experienced before. As with any new job, the new executive must prove that they belong in their new and more important role.
The author stresses 3 areas to consider:
1)Personal Presence (Confidence, energy, and communication).
2)Team Presence (Heavier reliance on the team vs the self, lead rather than do the tasks).
3)Organizational Presence (importance of developing good relationship with other executives)
Although suggestions are meaningful, they are not exactly viscerally compelling. The author seems to focus his suggestions on a narrow group of newly appointed executives with myopic vision. The overall summary seems to be to look beyond the details, and think out of the box and see the bigger picture of leading an organization through better personal, team, and organizational awareness brought on by the bigger scale of influence and accountability of an executive position
It is constuctive in that it points out how stengths at one level can be weaknesses or obstacles at "the Next Level" and then offers a path to "pick up" new behaviors and "let go" others as part of a self-development strategy.
The book also has a handy referenece at the end where you can look up a challenge and it refers you to the pages that address that specific aspect of management.
However, the book is so well-written and readable that you will proabably enjoy reading it in order.
The framework as well as the specific suggestions are original and substantiated with research and great examples. Mr. Eblin is an executive coach and this book has a serier of great "executive coaching" lessons for a fraction of what a personal session might cost. Well worth it!
