Editorial Reviews

Review

"Well, this just may be one of my new favorite series to keep tabs on...  Next to Me is a Love Happens Novel and the first in the series. It was full of drama, mystery, intrigue, and suspense. In my opinion, it's a great overall book." (The Erotic Book Blog)

"Next to Me always had my attention and there were so many things that I loved about it. I loved the characters; they're just so funny and awesome! I loved the passion and especially the message. It's definitely a book worth reading and I absolutely cannot wait for the next book in the series!!" (Give Me Books)

"4 ½ out of 5 stars... I really loved this book... Sam is just so glorious; total swoon-worthy! This book had steamy sex, a dominant alpha male, suspense, and a lot of action. I definitely recommend this book and I cannot wait to read about the next hot male that works at Scorpio Security."  (Hooked on Books)

"Loved this book.. could hardly put it down. Definitely will read the rest of this talented author's work.... I highly recommend it."

About the Author

My love for steamy romance began when I was in junior high. A friend and I came upon a dumpster of discarded paperbacks behind our small town's Ben Franklin store. The covers were missing and each book was torn in two, split right down the center of the spline. I found that to be no obstacle as I scanned each page looking for any love or lust words—and cuss words, too. It wasn't long before I was scouring the public library and our local discount store, devouring anything labeled romance. I said a tearfully grateful goodbye to Judy Bloom as Jackie Collins began ruling my world. I live with my high school sweetheart turned husband and our three, beloved DVR's, in the desert Southwest. Otherwise known as the surface of the sun during the summer months. My life long goals are to think before I speak, smile more and swear less, and actually weigh what my driver's license states I do. And I have been contemplating a hair color change for the last decade. I'm thinking red.

Ali is running for her life...literally. After enduring years of abuse, one night her husband does something that shows Ali he will kill her eventually if she stays. So, she runs and keeps running while trying to come up with a plan to keep herself safe when the day comes that he finds her.

She thinks she has hit the jackpot when she buys the house next door to super hot, ex Army Sniper now Security Specialist Sam. Now all she has to do is seduce him and hook him to her so when her ex comes around, even when he learns the truth he will still want to protect her.

There just one thing Ali didn't plan for and that is falling for Sam for real. As one lie leads to another Ali doesn't know how to come clean with him and make him understand how she feels. When the truth comes out, can Sam ever forgive her?

I was intrigued by this story right from the start. It is fast paced and once I started it I didn't want to put it down. I liked Ali and Sam, they are well written characters and their relationship is a crazy hot one. It develops fast and the reader is pulled along for the ride. They both have baggage and are dealing with issues which caused conflict throughout their relationship. The only real issue I had with this one is the conflict at the end. When the truth comes out, Sam says some really horrible things and even though Ali has been deceiving him, it seemed too harsh and I felt she was a little too quick to forgive him.

My thoughts:

Quick hook or slow starter? 5 (I was hooked from the first chapter)
Character development: 4
Level of Romance between characters: 4
Passion/Heat level: 4.5 (There is no delay in these two getting it on and it is hot!

Five out of five stars. A three-tear novel, meaning I cried three separate times while reading it. A can’t-put-down book. Literally, stayed up till 3:30 am when I intended to just read one chapter and finish the rest the next day. A bittersweet ending – sweet because of the ending, bitter because it ended. A sweet gentle story that just happens to involve guns, bloody violence, and raw sex.

“Next to Me” by Jodi Watters is all of this and more. “Next to Me” is her first novel, and she did a bang-up job. Ali Ross is on the run from her violent ex-husband, living every day in terror. He is coming for her, and she knows it is just a matter of time before he finds her. No security alarm, no gated community will stop him. Sam Gleeson is the quintessential former special-forces guy who now runs his own security company – a very well-run, very effective security company. The best of the best. And then there is Pete, Sam’s adorable but troublesome Labrador puppy. A sexy guy with a puppy – yes some can scream cliché, but Jodi Watters pulls it off flawlessly.

When the house hunting Ali learns that she has the potential of having a specialist in security as her next door neighbor, she buys the house and begins planning her seduction. Free personal security, anyone? Sign me up, please! She has the best of intentions, she only wants her ex scared off by her big brawny neighbor/lover. But as happens all too often in real life, things get complex quickly (especially when hot sweaty sex is involved). Will Sam hate her when he finds out she is manipulating him? Will her abusive ex-husband find her, and if he does will Sam come to her rescue in a blaze of white-knight glory? You THINK you know the answers, but the author has a few surprises in store for you.

I downloaded Next to Me as a free book from Amazon. A nice romance with a good, although predictable, story line. I like the writing style, lighthearted balanced with edgy. Both protagonists were evenly matched, which was really great to read, and a few of the secondary characters were fun additions for some great dialogue moments. While I thought the plot was an old one, the personalities made it work; although, I would not have jumped to the same conclusions the author tried to direct us to-- but I'll still give this a five-star rating regardless of the forced plot line because it was believable some people may have made these assumptions (or been upset by the circumstances).

Ali Ross is running and hiding from her ex-husband who was physically and emotionally abusive to her. He has threatened to find her and kill her for leaving him. Her ex, Danny, has been convicted of domestic violence and she has a protection order against him, but she is sure he will follow thru on his threats. She manages to buy a house next to Sam Gleeson, part owner of a Security company, and a kick ass Alpha male. For some stupid reason, she cooks up a scheme to make close friends with him, going so far as to have sex with him, in the hopes that he, Sam, could scare her ex, Danny, if Danny ever does find her. This also entails lots of lying to Sam which is explained as "embarrassment" by Ali for having an abusive ex-husband. What? Other than Ali being an idiot for using and lying to Sam, this is a well written, steamy, and sweet love story. I liked Sam and the other members of his co-workers, friends, and family.
