Fine basic computing commodity, a blast from the Circuit City past

I bought this on a bit of a whim to reuse an old 40GB drive replaced in my laptop. From the numerous small drive enclosures available on the internet, I selected this one based on:
a) not much larger than the drive itself
b) simple clean design and minimum graphics
c) presented with more care than the 'bare minimum' ebay suppliers

With respect to the last, the unit came nicely packaged in the original Circuit City box. The aluminum enclosure halves are thin and very light. They are a very snug fit over the plastic perimeter frame once a drive is installed. The round light on the end is brightly lit by a blue LED for power and a red LED for activity. Once assembled, the drive worked fine with my laptop running XP. The slow USB 1.1 connection on my old laptop limits raw data flow to 1 MByte/sec but random access time is the same as when the 44pin IDE/ATA drive was mounted inside the laptop. Overall, I am happy with this product as an inexpensive way of recycling an old hard drive into a large "USB stick". It also made me smile to recall going to the local Circuit City for their house brand accessories. I put the rating at four stars only to have a star in reserve for some other product that knocks my socks off by being more than I expected, not just as good as I hoped.

Works perfectly to connect an IDE-PATA laptop drive to a Mac

The enclosure worked perfectly to take a Samsung 2.5" IDE-PATA drive from a Windows laptop and connect it to an OS X Mac. No jumpers had to be set, no files installed. There is an auxiliary power port, but outside power was not needed other than using the included USB y-cable connected to 2 USB ports on the Mac. A negative is the NexxTech enclosure is a bit thin and flimsy, but once the drive is screwed down and the tops snapped on it's solid enough!
