  • Three flutes provide better chip-carrying capacity than four flutes and a finer finish than two, reducing the need for a second finishing cut in some applications
  • Square nose end mills (also called square end) create sharp, unrounded cuts
  • Titanium aluminum nitride (TiAlN) coating lubricates the end mill for high-temperature stability and abrasion resistance at high cutting speeds, offering better heat resistance than TiN and TiCN coatings
  • Carbide can run at higher speeds than high-speed steel, resisting abrasion and high cutting temperatures
  • Center-cutting design allows the end mill to plunge into material like a drill bit while also performing conventional surface milling

Product Description

Size:1 in

The Niagara Cutter C330 TiAlN-coated carbide square nose end mill has three flutes and a 30-degree helix angle for general-purpose machining on a range of materials. The tool’s square end creates sharp, unrounded cuts, and the center-cutting design has cutting teeth at the end of the tool, so it can be fed into the workpiece like a drill bit. The end mill’s three flutes provide better chip-carrying capacity than four flutes and a finer finish than two. They efficiently remove excess material from the cutting area and provide a third cutting edge to create an improved finish that may eliminate the need for a second finishing cut in some applications. The 30-degree helix angle supports general-purpose applications. It balances lower angles’ strong cutting edge for difficult-to-machine materials with higher angles’ increased cutting action.

The TiAlN coating resists heat better than TiN and TiCN coatings, increasing tool life and performance. It also offers increased hardness for abrasion resistance and may reduce the need for lubricants based on the application. (TiAlN is suitable for a range of materials, but TiCN or uncoated end mills are recommended for machining aluminum.) The carbide substrate is harder than high-speed or cobalt steel, making it more wear resistant at high speeds and providing longer tool life. Cutting diameter tolerance is +0.000” to -0.002”. The round shank accommodates a variety of holders.

End mills are designed to remove material and create multi-dimensional shapes and profiles. They have cutting edges along the outside diameter and flutes that remove chips from the cutting area and allow cooling fluids to enter. If heat is not reduced effectively, the tool’s cutting edges will dull and additional material buildup can occur. The number of flutes can range from two to eight. Two-flute designs offer the most efficient chip removal, but more flutes provide a smoother finish. The shank is the end of the tool held in place by a tool holder or machine. Center-cutting end mills can create three-dimensional shapes and profiles, and make plunge cuts similar to a drill bit. Non-center-cutting end mills are for applications such as peripheral milling and finishing, but cannot make plunge cuts.

Niagara Cutter has been designing and manufacturing precision cutting tools since 1954. Specializing in end mills, cutting mills, and saws, the company is based in New York and manufactures its tools at facilities in Pennsylvania and Massachusetts. This allows the company control over production, from substrate to coating, which is essential for customers in a variety of industries, especially aerospace and automotive.

I have been using this is one of my main mills to do cuts in everything from hardwood, softwood, and MDF on my 4 x 8 CNC table. I find that this mill gets the job done, even at high RPM and feedrates, where other mills get chatter.

The mill has never had an issue with going through material, giving me great finishes on cuts, and I turn to this mill for a lot of designs because you can get into the corners on more intricate designs that a larger end mill would not be able to do.

I would recommend this mill for your go to tool when doing a good majority of wood work. It has been through more than 50 jobs and is still sharp and ready to run.

This Square nose end mill cuts aluminum well. Used for several parts beyond what could be counted and continues to cut as new without any chipping. I will say the coating does appear to wear off fairly quick however it does not impede its ability to cut.

When the cutter is used to cut Carbon Fiber (Not recommended) The blade dulls after about 3-4 parts. Should more aluminum parts be attempted after the carbon cuts it tends to push material out of the way vice cut. Again this is no fault of the cutter as it is not intended for carbon fiber use. When used as advertised it works well and lasts.

What's not to like. It does what it's supposed to do, drilling or milling. I used it to finish the bottom of a blind hole I needed to tap. Just had to be careful of the sides of the hole or the milling edges on the side of the bit would overbore the hole. Was torn between two or four flutes for chip removal versus smoother finish so I settled for this three flute version. Worked great for my purposes as I got a clean hole with no chips at the bottom and a good finish.

Works great for wood as well. I use this cutter to machine the outside of drum-shells in a router/lathe set-up. It performs very well and leaves a beautiful machined surface that requires minimal sanding.

This end mill has been bullet proof for me so far. Contact Niagara and they will send you a slide rule for figuring out speeds and feeds too. I now own about 25 Niagara cutters. Awesome!
