Best to get programming cable and use "chirp" software..

This radio is still the best beginner radio out there for the price IMHO. It doesn't have a great display. It's not waterproof. It is a basic radio with a decent amount of programmable options.

The bigger battery really makes this radio better both in terms of battery life and also in form factor.

If you want a cheap way to check out amateur radio, this is still a good choice. Keep in mind that with this version you will need a programming cable and CHIRP. for just a couple of settings that cannot be changed via the keypad. They will act as if they changed, but when you check again you will find they reverted back to what they were, most notably, power level. Most other settings can be changed via the keypad.

Wow, i did not know this inexpensive radio can do so much. Besides the smaller ham bands. You can input your favorite radio stations for a portable fm radio. You have to find out which weather station your area is. But this thing can be a weather radio also. I can use it as a scanner, but of course if the police and first responders use a digital format. You wont be able to pick up with this radio. For the price, its a great radio.

Works fine, but got real hot using a PTT

Works great, the included PTT is garbage, wouldn't even recommend trying to use it. I tried to use this radio with a U94 PTT and the radio got extremely hot, like to the point that I unplugged the battery out of fear it might catch fire. I'm unsure if this was a fault of the U94 being miswired, or if the radio had a short somewhere, but it's something I felt was worth mentioning. Other than that it seems to be working fine. Bonus feature, the 147.XXX frequencies seem to cause audible interference with speaker systems! So that's kinda cool

This is not a two way as advertised. Even after following specific steps, it will not transmit on ANY frequency. Was going to use this for emergency contact while out on long multi-day hikes but the uv5r is nothing more than a paperweight that makes noise. 0/5 stars would not recommend unless you just want to listen to either static or dispatch chatter.
