Product Description

The Nicholson needle file set is an assortment of 12 files in a variety of shapes that are 5-1/2" long and have double-cut grade 4 Swiss pattern teeth for use in making jewelry, dies, watches, and fine tools. The Swiss pattern teeth are double-cut for rapid material removal, with high precision for work on delicate or intricate parts. The files have a coarseness grade of 4 for a fine finish. The built-in handle of each file is round and knurled for a secure grip. The set comes in a vinyl pouch for storage.

Hand files are used to remove material and smooth and shape workpieces. They have forward-facing cutting teeth and cut when pushed over either a stationary or rotating workpiece. Single-cut teeth are single rows cut diagonally across the width of the file. Double-cut teeth have two sets of rows cut in opposite directions. American pattern files have three coarseness grades. Coarse, also known as bastard cut, is suitable for efficient, heavy material removal where finish is not a concern. Medium, also known as second cut, offers average material removal and finish quality. Fine, also known as smooth cut, provides the smoothest finish. Swiss pattern files have eight coarseness grades, from 00 (coarse), 0 (medium), and 1 to 6 (fine to finest), offering a smoother finish than equivalent American pattern files. For Swiss pattern files the length of the tool is the length of the blade, not counting the tang, which is the pointed end fitted for a handle; for American pattern files the length of the tool is its entire length, including the tang.

Nicholson manufactures hand tools and power tool accessories. The company is headquartered in Sparks, MD.

As a watchmaker I'm very demanding on the quality of my tools. I needed a set of number 4 needle files for a project and I had a hard time finding files this size that were even sold by cut number. That's one sign of a quality file, if its sold by cut number. These are great files. I have another set of #2 needle files and they were much more expensive and of equal quality. I still had to safe edge two of the files in this kit. I always wish files came with a mirror safe edge but they simply don't. The slotting file was not perfectly flat when I polished the safe edges but it was not to hard to flatten out. these files came with some kind of harden oil coating that had to be removed. This coating was prob to avoid rust. I know these seem extremely expensive but you get what you pay for and for precision work these are great for the price, and trust me, I know expensive tools.

I purchased this based on the review by: Ama on April 19, 2012. I'm no watch maker, but I do appreciate good tools. And while this file set is more expensive than most, upon receiving them, the quality is readily apparent. If you are in the market for high end and precise files, this will fulfill your needs.
