Time travel is tricky, and I do admire Effinger's willingness to go full-bore into at least addressing all the inherent problems with it!
One problem is that his hero is rather a jerk. Given the opportunity, he exploits people- arguing that they are not as "real" as he is. Most pointedly, it allows him to rationalize leaving an alternative-world version of his girlfriend- who stuck by him and helped him- stranded when he went back to his "home" time... AND then resenting his "real" girlfriend for not having stood by him, even though she didn't have the opportunity.
If Effinger was trying to prove how stupid time-travel novels generally are- well it's a brilliant success! He gleefully demonstrates ALL the confusions and contradictions inherent in the trope, and does it with enthusiasm!
