Often times the choices you pick are based solely off your own morals, and there usually won't be a reward or punishment either way. At first I found that a bit odd, since most games that have choices like to have direct consequences so that you feel directly responsible, but I found I rather like this better. It doesn't train you to choose the 'right' or 'wrong' answer, because there is no right or wrong answer. You just have to think hard about the decision you think is best, and that way you're not choosing something because you feel like you have to for an ulterior motive.
Characters were complex and had decent development.
Voice acting for main characters were superb, but all other minor characters' voice acting was sub-par at best.
Gameplay might not be the most original, but I had fun with it. Was in it more for the story, tbh.
A lot of retrieval quests that have to do with luck, so a LOT of grinding. That might be my only major con. A minor con was Nier's scary bird-like face. His face just doesn't look right, especially compared to everyone else.
Considering all that I'd say it's definitely worth the buy.
NieR has two things going for it that hurt it. The story has a lot of character development in the beginning and most people will find it to be kinda slow and it can sadly make people who dont understand why its so nessacary put it down. About half way through the game this changes. By the end of the game you will be in tears.
The second thing is the combat which can be a bit repetitive. The magic adds an interesting twist with a bullet hell feel in an action game.
Regardless of these downfalls I refuse to give it any less than 5 stars simply for Yoko Taro's ability to tell a story and the music itself. If you're up for the original emotional rollercoaster before NieR Automata, then prepare your tear ducts because this game is just as good if not better at traumatizing full grown men.
I've left nearly the same review on NieR Replicant since they are almost exactly the same. The only difference in this version is that Nier himself is a middle aged man with Yonah being his daughter, and it's in English.
I've wanted this game for about six years since I first saw someone play it on YouTube, but I was in my early teens when I saw it so I didn't have any money to purchase it myself. Forgot about it for a while until playing it at someone else's house a while back. I hunted around a bit but couldn't find any copies for less than $50-$60, and while looking around last night, I was delighted to see it for $25. I can't wait to sit down and play this game at last.
I hope it gets remade with an even better NG+ on Automata's level.

The Cons:
From the graphic/visual standpoint NieR is really under par, sometimes it almost feels like a PS2 game; blend and uninteresting environment, clunky character animation, especially when you are jumping you feel like a dancing gorilla.
The fetch and reward sidequest are really getting on player's nerves; lots of quests are just the same thing with different description/destination. Most of them have minimal impact on main story and character development, but there are ones that are actually enjoyable, which will be detailed later on.
The Pro:
Memorable music: Most pieces will invoke a sense of sadness, and that is the what the game is trying to tell the player. Almost all of the track have vocals in them, and each one fits the setting perfectly. Few games can bring this many vocal tracks without distracting player from in game conversations/cutscenes.
Good voice acting and character portrayal: This is one of those Japanese games that actually got voice over done right in the English version (Like Metal Gear Solid series); character emotions are strongly presented, and they sounded like actual human beings, rather than someone reading from a script. Each character has a very memorable personality thanks to the good VO, and you will get to like each character equally no matter who they are (Kaine is just great, liked her the moment she appeared, Emil is very likeable in many ways).
Although you won't get tons of cutscenes in game (like Metal Gear Solid 4) for character building, there are still plenty of dialogues/monologue for you to really dive into the character's mindset; some happened naturally as you progressed through game, while others happened in side quests.
Side Quests:
Boring as they may be, side quests are strongly recommended for player to get the full NieR experience; the characters will often commenting on the nature of the quest, and sometimes they even make fun of the boring tasks. Sometimes you will hear characters lamenting on the concept of life and death from a simple fetch quest, other times you might get to see NPCs doing things they don't normally do. It is the little things that make a boring quest interesting, and make you to like the characters more.
Also much of the extras activities within the game are only accessible through side quest; want to ride a giant boar? finish a quest to do it. Want to grow vegetables in your backyard? there are quests for that. Like to fish for sport? you got a quest for that too. Those activities are completely optional, but doing so you will be rewarded with interesting dialogs as well as hours of fun (not to mention you can get more money by selling your own produce).
Some of the sidequests are very well sought-out; they are not one-off errands, some are related to events in the main game, and will often provide a bit more insight into the story. Some side quests are related to each other; there are quests that will offer closure to an earlier quest. It really shows the designers' attention to detail, and made those quests enjoyable.
The Combat:
It is a game that heavily references other games (you will see Zelda, Diablo, Resident Evil, J-Super Robot references, and much more), the typical combat involves Devil May Cry/God Of War/Dynasty Warrior type of hack and slash, and you get to use different kind of magic attack/buffs to combat increasingly powerful foes. The game has a level system like any RPG, stats matter to a certain point (like how many magic attack you can pull off, how much HP you got), but player skill still dictates the battle outcome.
There are plenty of weapons to be found, and none of them requires you to grind for a drop. Most weapons only shares visual differences, as their move sets are similar (for weapons of the same group like one-handed, two-handed, etc.). However collect all of the weapons does help you unlock the "true" ending of the game, so bear that in mind.
Magic abilities are useful, but not all of them are useful at any given time, so you have to switch them based on the current situation. As your 'MP' meter grows, you can charge up your magic attacks for a more devastating attack, which can be very useful against bosses.
The boss battles are pretty well balanced, as most battles have checkpoints in them, so if you failed after the checkpoint you don't have to start over (like Dark Souls series). The only con is finish the boss when is close to defeat, where a time-sensitive life gauge will appear on the boss' body, and you have to deplete it before the timer expires. In normal mode is usually not a problem, but in hard mode is often impossible to finish the boss in one sitting, meaning the boss will recover a small portion of its health, and you have to fight it again to delete the timer life gauge.
Replayability:
Like Drag-On Dragoon/Drakengard, NieR will feature multiple endings, along with the 'True Ending" that will bring the most shocking revelations and the most difficult choice you as a player will make (no spoiler here, but it is a really difficult and emotional decision for both the player and the protagonist).
The more you play, the more you will understand about the world and the background. The atmosphere will get progressively more depressing after each ending, and things are really not what they seems. Without further spoiler, you as the player have to experience the story on your own, and come to terms with the tragedy that is masterly planned in layers.
Overall Impression:
NieR is undeniably a cult classic that is hidden under poor graphics and repetitive game play, if you can look past them you will be rewarded with emotionally-driven story and memorable characters that you will actually care about. It really deserves the attentions like its successor, they are all masterpieces in their own right, and when the stories end you can still enjoy their beautiful soundtracks in the years to come.
