What makes this product “pure”?
To be classified as “Pure” by the FDA, extracts must meet a set of strict requirements. These requirements include that pure vanilla extract must contain 13.35 ounces of vanilla beans per gallon of liquid and be 35% alcohol. The agency also limits the permissible ingredients beyond beans and alcohol. We use the “Pure” classification because we only use all-natural ingredients and follow FDA guidelines for creating our extracts.
How does Madagascar Bourbon Pure Vanilla Extract differ from Pure Vanilla Extract?
Our Madagascar Bourbon Pure Vanilla Extract is produced using only premium, hand-selected beans cultivated in Madagascar, widely regarded as the world’s highest quality vanilla, and has a rich, sweet and creamy vanilla flavor. Our Pure Vanilla Extract uses a proprietary blend of high-quality vanilla beans grown around the world and is specially formulated to provide a classic vanilla flavor profile.
Why is there sugar in the extract?
Sugar is one of five permissible ingredients the FDA allows in pure vanilla extracts. It helps in the extraction process by keeping the extracted vanilla compounds in suspension, aiding in product clarity. We use 100% all-natural, crystalized cane sugar for its reliable quality and taste. The sugar content in our extract makes up less than 5% of the finished product, an amount that is nutritionally insignificant when a small quantity is added to a dish. We do not add any extra sugar after the extraction process.
What is the origin of this vanilla?
The vanilla beans used to create our Madagascar Bourbon Pure Vanilla Extract are sourced from the island of Madagascar, located just off the southeastern coast of Africa. Madagascar is the world’s leading supplier of vanilla beans, and we hand-select the beans used to ensure the finished product is of the highest quality.
Is there bourbon whiskey in this product?
No, the term Bourbon is only a geographic reference to where the vanilla beans are sourced. The Bourbon Islands–Madagascar, Comoro, Réunion, Seychelles and Mauritius–are located off the eastern coast of Africa. While there is a small amount of alcohol in our extracts due to our production process, most it will either be cooked off during preparation or spread throughout the entirety of your dish.

This is not Madagascar Bourbon Pure Vanilla

As you will see in the attached photo, this is not Madagascar Bourbon Pure Vanilla as advertised. The packaging has the correct name, but the actual product is just plain vanilla. When I contacted the seller about this the response was that since the order was fulfilled by Amazon, then Amazon needed to fix the problem. They took no ownership or responsibility for this issue which seems to happen over and over again.The product itself is like a sauce, instead of a paste which is what I was looking for. The smell and flavor are nice, but it is lacking the deep, rich aroma and flavor found in Madagascar Vanilla. It's like receiving regular cinnamon when you ordered Vietnamese cinnamon. Both are lovely, but the later has more of a bite. You get the idea.

Good quality vanilla paste... and there really are two bottles! Unlike vanilla extract/essence which is made with alcohol infusion of the vanilla pod (which might be a no-no for some and the reason I was interested in trying an alternative) this product is made with only a % of extract (so I see that as at least some reduction in the alcohol content) with lots of vanilla seeds (see picture of vanilla paste added to some cake icing, giving your cake/icing the look of having used a vanilla pod) and a sweet taste. It is amazing for the price, when I ordered it I didn't quite believe that it was a pack of two (2 x 118ml bottles, see picture), but I ordered it thinking even if its only one bottle thats still a good price!
