What makes this product “pure”?

To be classified as “Pure” by the FDA, extracts must meet a set of strict requirements. These requirements include that pure vanilla extract must contain 13.35 ounces of vanilla beans per gallon of liquid and be 35% alcohol. The agency also limits the permissible ingredients beyond beans and alcohol. We use the “Pure” classification because we only use all-natural ingredients and follow FDA guidelines for creating our extracts.

How does Madagascar Bourbon Pure Vanilla Extract differ from Pure Vanilla Extract?

Our Madagascar Bourbon Pure Vanilla Extract is produced using only premium, hand-selected beans cultivated in Madagascar, widely regarded as the world’s highest quality vanilla, and has a rich, sweet and creamy vanilla flavor. Our Pure Vanilla Extract uses a proprietary blend of high-quality vanilla beans grown around the world and is specially formulated to provide a classic vanilla flavor profile.

Why is there sugar in the extract?

Sugar is one of five permissible ingredients the FDA allows in pure vanilla extracts. It helps in the extraction process by keeping the extracted vanilla compounds in suspension, aiding in product clarity. We use 100% all-natural, crystalized cane sugar for its reliable quality and taste. The sugar content in our extract makes up less than 5% of the finished product, an amount that is nutritionally insignificant when a small quantity is added to a dish. We do not add any extra sugar after the extraction process.

What is the origin of this vanilla?

The vanilla beans used to create our Madagascar Bourbon Pure Vanilla Extract are sourced from the island of Madagascar, located just off the southeastern coast of Africa. Madagascar is the world’s leading supplier of vanilla beans, and we hand-select the beans used to ensure the finished product is of the highest quality.

Is there bourbon whiskey in this product?

No, the term Bourbon is only a geographic reference to where the vanilla beans are sourced. The Bourbon Islands–Madagascar, Comoro, Réunion, Seychelles and Mauritius–are located off the eastern coast of Africa. While there is a small amount of alcohol in our extracts due to our production process, most it will either be cooked off during preparation or spread throughout the entirety of your dish.

This is my second purchase of this vanilla, and I love it. The first time it came in a beautiful box, and was bubble wrapped, perfect. This second time, it only came in bubble wrap, and therefore broke in transit. While it did spill everywhere, it did not damage the other items in the box, just the packaging. Be selective and take note of the seller when buying this product. After some run around with Amazon, I did get a refund on it, and purchased another, and it arrived as it should have. I still give the product 5 stars, because it’s everything I need it to be! Smells delicious, the texture is perfect, it’s so easy to use, and it’s so versatile. I’ve used it in everything from hot cocoa, to flan, and it’s been perfection every time. And the size of the jar, for the price is definitely great! Will purchase again!
