Owen Jones’ ‘A Night in Annwn’ starts with an ordinary life of a widower who has an extraordinary near death experience. In his near death experience William finds himself in Annwn with his late wife as his guide. Near death experiences, reincarnation, and the journey of the soul are topics I love to explore, but I did not know much about the Welsh mythology of Annwn. I feel that ‘A Night in Annwn’ William’s exploration of Annwn was very descriptive, interesting and inspiring. I found William’s, and his daughter’s, quest for spiritual knowledge and healing thought provoking. I applaud that while William embraced his phenomenal near death experience he also strive to have a fuller life than he had been living before his experience. The end of William’s story was very touching and uplifting.
This is a book that makes you think beyond the here and now. Well done.

About the Author
Author Owen Jones, from Barry, South Wales, came to writing novels relatively recently, although he has been writing all his adult life. He has lived and worked in several countries and travelled in many, many more. He speaks, or has spoken, seven languages fluently and is currently learning Thai, since he lives in Thailand with his Thai wife of ten years. "It has never taken me long to learn a language," he says, "but Thai bears no relationship to any other language I have ever studied before." When asked about his style of writing, he said, "I'm a Celt, and we are Romantic. I believe in reincarnation and lots more besides in that vein. Those beliefs, like 'Do unto another...', and 'What goes round comes around', Fate and Karma are central to my life, so they are reflected in my work'. His first novel, 'Daddy's Hobby' from the series 'Behind The Smile: The Story of Lek, a Bar Girl in Pattaya' has been followed by four sequels, but his largest collection is 'The Megan Series', eighteen novellas on the psychic development of a young teenage girl, the subtitle of which, 'A Spirit Guide, A Ghost Tiger and One Scary Mother!' sums them up nicely. As Owen puts it: 'Born in the Land of Song, living in the Land of Smiles'.

This book took me by surprise. I love mythology. I thought there might be fairies and fanciful myths. But this tale is far more than that. It's about life, hopes, and dreams.
William, a simple farmer, misses his wife Sarah, who has died. He's walking with his dog and the dog keels over and dies. He holds him. Then he opens his eyes in a hospital. The doctors and nurses tell him he's dead. He looks over and sees his wife. Of course, he asks if he's in heaven. She explains he's in the Welsh version of heaven. He then sees his dog.
What follows is unusual and sweet at the same time. He learns from Sarah and his guide that his body is gone but what is left is his soul and the perception of his body. He must project what he wants others to see of him. His surroundings are also a projection of his thoughts. He was never in a hospital in his Welsh heaven. He expected a hospital and so he saw one.
This story takes you on a delightful journey to explore your inner thoughts and dreams. Bravo!

Owen Jones’ ‘A Night in Annwn’ starts with a man going through a near-death experience (NDE). I’ve had one of those myself, so it caught my attention as this is a book of fiction. I also didn’t know much about the mythology of Wales. Owen is a natural storyteller. The vivid portrayals of the scenes bring you right along with the story. Yet the story never bogs down or becomes preachy. It’s uplifting and inspiring, especially for people who ask, “Is this all there is?” NDEs do tend to wake us up and change our priorities on an epic scale. I heartily recommend this book.

I gave this title four stars even though I didn't love, love, love either the story or the performance. Why? Because the story did make me think about its core message and lingered in my consciousness long after I'd moved on to other books. I've read Mr. Jones' before, and though his story telling could use a bit of streamlining and editing, he always has a message to convey and succeeds in holding the reader/listener's attention. Willy Jones' life turns around dramatically after a near-death experience that occurs while he is wallowing in a protracted decline following his wife's death. He doesn't so much see the light as realize that the light on the other side is much sunnier and that he has good he can still do while waiting for his own entry ticket to that sunnier land. It's all a bit simplistic and too-good-to-be-true, but the author claims the book is based on real occurrences, so who knows? I requested and received a complimentary copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review, and I'll probably read/listen to more of Owen Jones' work in the future. This book is available as an Audio Escape title, but I think listeners should know it is not typical "Escape" material. There is love, but not romance, and it's definitely not what I'd want if I wanted a simple "escape" listen.

I was given this free review copy audio-book at my request and have voluntarily left this review. This review is for the audio copy of A Night In Annwn - The Story of the Near-Death Experience of Willy Jones by Owen Jones and narrated by Andrew McGuirk. I really enjoyed this book. I didn’t know what to expect and was very pleasantly surprised very shortly into the story. For me the story was very though provoking and gave me pause to consider what might be on the other side. The narrator did a superlative job of reading the story. He made it come alive in my mind.

A sometimes heart breaking and sometimes heart warming novel of the life of a shepherd.
Reviewed in the United States on February 25, 2016
I did originally read this in e-book form. I can't seem to find my original review but I remember I loved it. It is sometimes heart breaking and sometimes heart warming novel of the life of a shepherd. He has recently lost his wife and lives alone with his dog. He is truly depressed and his house and life is a mess! His daughter comes around all the time and attempts to get him to move around a little--at least she cleans up his cottage for him.
Then one day he decides to go for a walk up the mountain with his dog. The dog is old and has a heart attack--the old man tries to pick him up and ends up having a heart attack himself. Luckily his daughter finds him and although near death---the hospital is able to revive him. He has a near death experience with his wife.
Then his life changes for the better.
You really have to read this novel and/or listen to it on Audible as I did this time. The narrator did a marvelous job. He was able to capture the emotions of all the characters in the novel.
I received the audio book (and the e-book) from the author for my enjoyment and possible review.

Owen Jones’ ‘A Night in Annwn’ is a lyrical mixture of a cozy tale with the intriguing and challenging subject of life after death. Jones’ tackles the story with delicacy and creates a sense of hope within the reader whatever their own beliefs about the subject may be. Unlike other books, usually non-fiction, which treat the concept of life after death in an almost clinical fashion, often citing case histories etc, the use of fiction to relate the simple life led by the protagonist, and how that changes after his experience, is very effective. Jones’ explanations of how matters ‘work’ in Annwn (the Welsh concept for the afterlife) is one which will provoke interest and discussion long after the reader has finished the book.

A Night in Annwn, is a beautiful feel good story, full of hope. The realistic and sympathetic descriptions of William, his daughter, and his wife Sarah pulled me into the story and had me caring from the start. I also enjoyed the insightful description of Welsh traditions and life. Welsh heaven is wonderful and left me hoping it was true.
This is a thought provoking story with a big heart. A book which shouldn’t be overlooked.
