"Santore has illustrated many classic stories, including Snow White, The Wizard of Oz, and The Little Mermaid, and he now brings to life Moore’s 'A Visit from St. Nicholas' in characteristically elegant and detail-rich paintings. His is a very traditional vision, as he brings readers inside a stately colonial home, tastefully appointed with wreaths, garlands, and stockings. In a particularly nice bit of design, when the narrator 'Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash,' readers can do the same, opening a double-page gatefold that reveals a quiet village blanketed by snow—and a sleigh silhouetted against the moon. It’s a gorgeous interpretation of a beloved holiday classic. All ages. (Oct.)"

The pages are all hard since it’s a board book and none stuck together. The only complaint I have is that it’s pretty dark. I can understand its a night time book so everything is dark and they added light to the book. Christmas lights, Santa glowing, the stars etc and of course classic with all the words and etc. But seriously, my eyes aren’t the greatest and they’ll only get worse so I was struggling to engage with this book while reading. The words are clear the pictures are just dark even with the light added in the illustration to me. I added a photo with flash on and off. It doesn't seem super dark in the photos but up close I was squinting a little. With that said though, I think this is a staple book to have in every child’s collection!
The bright colorful pictures are very nicely done. They have a lot of details and plenty going on to entertain young kids. The story is a great classic for the Holidays. My niece is bothered by cigarette smoke. It makes her cough and she hates the smell. I don't even know if she has ever seen someone actually smoking a pipe. She would probably just say... yucky.. Santa is smoking. If you want your kids to experience the original then just find the original. We enjoyed this one so I am happy with it.
Pros: The cover is puffy/squishy which gives it a childlike allure. The pictures are both realistic and cartoonish which allows a certain type of fantasy meets reality type of feel. I thoroughly appreciate the imagery of the book as it is something that will not be outgrown. I should also say this book has a nostalgic feel to me as pictures somewhat remind me of a book I owned when I was little.
Cons: The binding feels a little cheap, like if I were to handle it a little too roughly (or just simply over time) the pages would fall loose. The pages themselves feel very thin. I'm very nervous reading the book around my 1 year old as I feel one quick move on her part would shred the page in seconds.
Overall a great buy for the money and a great pictorial rendition of a classic Christmas poem.
