Theo Waxnicki was injured at the end of the previous book and is brought to Selena's hospice ward with little hope of surviving. Although Theo has always been lucky--surviving the Change and aging very little over the past 50 years, it looks like his luck has finally run out, until Selena uses her gift in a unique way and brings Theo back to life.
Theo and Selena share a deep connection and a serious attraction for one another. There are also answers to the overall mystery at Selena's compound that have been hidden for 50 years. The search into how the Change happened and who was behind it is suspenseful. It is also fun to see all the references to the popular culture of our time. While Night Betrayed had a satisfying ending, the story is far from over, and I'm looking forward to the rest of the books in the series.
Selena is called the Death Lady and her 'abilities' enable her to ease pain of the dying and help them transition into the next world. YIKES! That is one freaky ability. It's not a wonder why no one wants her around. However, she has other secrets she's doesn't share. And speaking of secrets, Theo has a doozy. He survived the Change 50 years before but he hasn't aged a day. But he can die. Close to death, Theo is brought to the Death Lady and dies. But instead of helping him cross over she brings him back to life!
Wow! This one was just a wild teacup ride from start to finish. So many secrets, so many twist and turns. Seriously, I don't know whose secrets were weirder. It all starts with Theo dying. No! And Serena bring him back to life. What? Everybody is wondering the same thing... HOW! yes it gets explained but it was still quite the head scratcher for a while. I did enjoy their interactions and as all the secrets came into play and were revealed. The big one for me was the Gangas. I had my suspicions and had been guess the whose but I could never figure out the hows. Let me just say it was ghastly shocking and I did not see that coming! Be ready for a lot of reveals, shockers, and a interesting ending that may or may not involve moving a bookshelf. LOL!!!
There's quite a few new characters in this story as well as some old familiar ones. As for the old familiars, take this suggestion to heart: this series needs to be read in order. There's a lot of world building that are associated to The Change and those characters.Read more ›
Do start with the first book if you can find it. Our public library carries it, but that was they only one they had of the series. A friend recommended the book....I ended up buying all of them and everyone i share them with has loved the books too.
Wonderful plot line, don't let the cover fool you into thinking it is the same ole same ole type of book.
Theo and Selena don't really connect. They both seem just attracted to one another. The passion and romantic connection seems lacking. This leads to not so hot sex. She's too busy making a fuss about their age difference. As we know from the previous books Theo is close to 80 years old. He was wounded during the Change and was left with a computer integrated circuit in his back. The circuit in his back is fitting since he and his brother Lou are Envy's computer junkies. I liked the concept of how Selena was different from most people. She has the ability of being able to see a death aura around people. She knows exactly when they are about to take their last breath. Selena first noticed this ability when she was a child. She has earned the title of the Death Lady. That is not her only ability though. Selena gets up close with the gangas on a regular basis. She helps their human soul pass into the afterlife. Theo being an alpha male has major issues with her putting herself in danger. Selena is such a secretive woman that will not share the reasons and the compulsions behind why she does what she does. This is the cause of much conflict and strain on her and Theo's relationship. Theo is also mending a heart that Sage broke.
Few questions were answered, more were presented. I think that is typical of series books. The readers do get to find out how the gangas came to be. The characters from the previous books in the series get very little play in this book. We do not get much insight into the Elite. Remy is still around and still running from the residents of Envy.Read more ›
