Product Description
In 1976, after years of mysterious absence, Marcus (Anthony Mackie, THE HURT LOCKER) returns to the Philadelphia neighborhood where he came of age in the midst of the Black Power movement. While his arrival raises suspicion among his family and former neighbors, he finds acceptance from his old friend Patricia (Kerry Washington, RAY) and her daughter. However, Marcus quickly finds himself at odds with the organization he once embraced, whose members suspect he orchestrated the slaying of their former comrade-in-arms. In a startling sequence of events, Marcus must protect a secret that could shatter everyone's beliefs as he rediscovers his forbidden passion for Patricia.

Great writing skills are apparent in this wonderful film. Stellar performances by Washington, Mackie, Pierce and a supporting cast who definitely delivers (sorry don't know their names). It reminds me of watching old Panther movies about the struggle and the times when Black people had to go under cover just to speak their minds. I loved seeing the connection people had with one another back then.
This movie will take you back to the 70s so you can experience it. All I can say is what a great movie for everyone to see. This Director Tanya Hamilton
really has a bright future especially with highly successful pieces of work like this one; she is worthy of so much more. I'm recommending this film to everyone I know. For the simple fact, that these producers and creators really KNOW how to tell a story, and a GOOD story at that. It warms my heart to know that there are industry professionals out there that care about important historical subject matters as opposed to T&As kinda stuff all the time.
I loved the time period of the story too, the strong acting by the lead characters; but the person who really WOWED me was Wendell Pierce, I'm mean he really came through on this film - he showed real skill; Thx for the perfect casting....it really showed!! This film shows that The Black Panther Movement will not end in the lives of those who lived it.
Hope you can see the movie soon!!
Major highlight of the movie is the music. I would say one of the great scoring jobs of all time. It's worth the movie just to listen to the music. The sound editing is also excellent, and works well with the music and audio montage sequences.
Casting is right on the money. I've never seen a movie where every single part is so perfectly cast. So many great actors, of all ages, at the absolute prime of their craft.
Photography is beautiful.
The story might start out a little slow, but they are building to something worthwhile. I could also have used a little more of the politics, but you do get a very sense of the era.
The BPP message of community, family, and protection against those that sought to exploit and alienate us, was something to lift our minds. Though I was a young teen at the time as I read more I began to understand that this was a social movement that challenged the governments way of treating us with little respect.
This film is told during the aftermath of the movement. It is not so much about the Black Panther Party as it is about two individuals that came from the movement, and now trying to continue to live their lives. Yes they understood that it was time to move on, but for one an incident happenens in the past that occasionally bring up shame and guilt.
The cast is great Anthony Mackie does a good job playing the lead role of Marcus, and Kerry Washington continues to be one of my favorites. She is suburb as Patty the ex panther, and mother. Jamara Griffin plays Washington's daughter and she is also great.
What I really liked that the film does is provides us with film clips from that period instead trying to tell a story around it.
Also what I appreicated most was the interviews in the extras from former panther members Bobby Seals & Jamal Joseph.
As you can see I liked this movie.
