Editorial Reviews

After delving into the old gospel and blues traditions of the south with Salvation In Lights, Mike Farris is continuing his musical and spiritual journey with a new collection of songs steeped in turn of the century roots country, gospel and blues. Coming off a recent Dove Award win for Best Traditional Gospel Album of the Year for SHOUT! Live, Mike was inspired directly by the Nashville flood in May to write a song that reflected the events as well as using an old refrain used by musicians in the pre-war era. The Night the Cumberland Comes Alive is the song as well as the name of the 6 track EP Mike recorded on May 27th at the Downtown Presbyterian Church along with an all star team of Nashville talent including: Sam Bush, Ketch Secor and Gill Landry (Old Crow Medicine Show), Kenny Vaughan (Marty Stuart), Byron House (Robert Plant) and the McCrary Sisters along with other members of the Roseland Rhythm Revue.

Mike had been moved by this old roots music prior to the events of early May and along with fellow music history lover, Ketch Secor, composed a song ( Dear Lazarus ) which could easily have found its place in the field recordings discovered by Alan Lomax. Wrapped Up, Tangled Up has an older traditional gospel feel complete with Brother Mike testimony. Down On Me , Mother Earth and Don t Let the Sun Go Down are all pre-war songs with different backgrounds but still have that timeless feel to them.

The entire EP is a great snapshot of what inspiration and purpose can do when you have amazing talent all focused on something bigger than themselves. With that in mind the goal is to have the majority of the proceeds benefit the victims of the Nashville flood. As much of this music was originally born out of struggle it seems appropriate to give back and help heal the community Mike calls home.

I heard some Mike Farris tunes at my church and had to find out who this awesome vocalist was. I am very pleased with this CD, and I can't stop my body from bouncing along with the beat. However, the sound engineers messed up the job here. The vocals get lost behind the instrumentalists. The lyrics deserve to be heard more!

Only six tracks - a damn shame. So unique is this album, this singer, this band, it's best to just shut up and let you sample the songs. What is it? Imagine Francine Lee (Lyle Lovett's band) belting out rough & tumble arrangements weaving amongst jug band blues, soul, gospel, spirituals, etc. This is old-style stuff, but so compelling. These are songs I'd imagine could have been recorded at Levon Helm's Midnight Ramble (in fact, all six songs were recorded in a single 6-hour session). This is a real hootenanny - if you have the temperament for something a little different, I highly recommend giving this one a shot.

GENRES: Soul, gospel, blues.

BUY IF YOU LIKE: Not even sure who to compare to....

MUST HEAR TRACKS: All (there are only six).

It's so rare to hear music like this today...this is spontaneous, pure, and absolutely riveting. Mike got together some musical friends, including members of Old Crow Medicine Show, Byron House (played bass on the last Robert Plant record), Kenny Vaughan (from Marty Stuart's band), the McCrary Sisters, and more to record this in a matter of 6 hours at the downtown Presbyterian Church in Nashville.

If you've got a record player, head over to Mike's web site […] and pick up the 180 gram limited edition vinyl. THAT sounds amazing.

A portion of the proceeds from this EP will benefit flood relief and recovery efforts through the Tennessee Emergency Response Fund, to help
the region recover from the devastating floods of May 2010.

More genius from Mike Farris.
I have had the distinct pleasure of seeing Mike play live, in multiple settings. Whether he's rocking, or singing Gospel, the man can just sing. In addition to his gifts, he takes pride in consistently surrounding himself with unbelievable musicians and singers. This album is no exception. Buy this album. Listen to it. Then go buy the rest. Amazing.

I started listening to Mike Farris when he put out the salvation in lights album. It filled a desire for me to have music that was upbeat and a bit bluesy while still maintaining a christian perspective. This music makes you want to clap your hands and stomp your feet while praising the Lord.
