With its volumes on the expiration of a pet, the death of a relative, and divorce, it would be nice if the Lifes Challenges series wasnt necessary. But where trauma exists, there will always be picture books up to the challenge of addressing them. This --Booklist

I was pleased to see that this book has child-friendly drawings that my son was able to enjoy. I like how it explains the process in simple ways that a child would understand and it has been very helpful with my son in our current situation. Very useful and colorful.

Through its Picture Window Books imprint, Capstone has published four books in its Life's Challenges Series, covering topics that are difficult to discuss with children. This particular title is one you hope you never need to share with a child. But the harsh reality is that in 2010, 2.7 million children in the US had a parent who was incarcerated - that's 3.6% of all children in the US. And those numbers are on the rise.

This is the story of a young boy (dog) who loves to draw so much that his dad nicknames him, "Sketch" One night while Sketch and his siblings are at their dad's apartment, the police come to arrest the father, and a social worker (cat) comes to speak to the children until their mom picks them up. Poor Sketch gets ridiculed at school when classmates learn of his dad's arrest. We learn about the emotional toil this plays on Sketch and how the adults in this young boy's life help him get through this tough time.
Guidance and Mentoring

In the story, Sketch learns from the adults in his life that he has done nothing wrong, and it is perfectly normal to be scared, angry and even embarrassed about his dad being in jail. He even gets to visit him in jail and later at the prison where his dad is serving a six-year sentence. Sketch gets matched with a male mentor, and he even meets other children who have a mom or dad in prison.

What is most wonderful about The Night Dad Went to Jail, is that young readers going through this traumatic experience in their own lives will be able to fully relate to the main character. Author Melissa Higgins manages to tell the story without sugar-coating the negative situation, yet also without scaring the reader.

I purchased this book for a mom of a child in my school who did not know how to tell her five year old that dad was going to jail for about one year. The parents read the book first and then read it to their daughter several times. They told me this book was exactly what they needed and said exactly what they needed it to say.

This is a helpful guide for children who find themselves in a very painful circumstance.

The "funny" reviews are clearly written by people who have no understanding of the reality of why this book was written.
