Set in 19th century Scotland, hero William Arundel is a special agent of the Crown sent to discover information about a rather grisly murder. Will belongs to an elite group of people who research strange phenomena (think early paranormal (FX type researchers) and there is certainly something strange happening in the small Scottish town that has a castle with a beautiful woman who never seems to age.
Lady Judith MacAlisdair is protective of her people and privacy and she is very suspicious of Will. He asks too many questions. The two find themselves in a quandary, both are fiercely attracted to each other but each harbors secrets about their identity.
There are some strange goings on and Will and Judith find themselves moving from a distrustful relationship to one that becomes romantic. Judith realizes she needs Will in many ways and even though at first she is frosty and distant, she becomes softer and willing to share her burdens with Will which are many. Will finds himself falling for someone who is so much more than she seems.
There’s plenty of action in this novel. Both leads are heroic and the tension between the leads is good. Night of the Highland Dragon is a fine novel with a plot that is unique.
This has to be one of the hardest reviews I have ever written. Night of the Highland Dragon is book three in Isabel Cooper's, Highland Dragon Series and it actually takes place in the Highlands, something neither of the two previous books did.
Unfortunately for me, it didn't save the book. Sorry Ms. Cooper I know you worked hard and tried to create interesting characters but for me.. this book plodded.
Judith MacAlasdair is Lady of the Manor (ok Castle but for some reason manor worked better). It's her turn to rule the roost so to speak. It seems the family has their jobs pretty set. Rule for a while then one of the others steps in and stays home for 50 or so years and then switch again. Anyway that's of little consequence.. She's home and freaky things are happening (thinks the woman who turns into a dragon).
William Arundell is basically a paranormal inspector, it's his job to check out things that go hump in the night. He also fights them and destroys them. But first he must investigate them. He has some pretty interesting powers of his own. Well, not necessarily powers.. just education and skills. He is currently investigating some deaths that have demonic implications and because Judith has a mysterious background, she's his first choice of villain.
I am not sure if it's the era or the subject matter but Ms. Cooper works hard at representing an era that was more or less obsessed with the Occult. It seems there were mystics and mind readers on every corner during the Victorian Era. So it would make sense that this was at least alluded to in a book about that time period. It's just that it doesn't work.
Everything seems forced together. Plots are stilted and characters are boring.Read more ›
William is quite baffled by Judith. Judith is wary of William. All his questions just rubs her the wrong way. She's reluctant to help in the investigation until the investigation twists and they find they must work together against a common evil. Their chemistry is simmering throughout the book.
This story was an adventure for me as I typically read historical romance novels. The paranormal aspect, which I liked, added to the drama and entertainment of the story. Definitely a different spin on historicals! Our main characters are written well and the world they are living in was vividly depicted! I could see the lush land and smell the sweets from the bakery! William thought he was just following a lead and he becomes involved in an area where fantastical creatures actually live peacefully amongst the locals. Who would've thought?? The story is fun, sultry, and even dangerous! The only thing I would've liked was to have more dragon shifting! Dragons are a bit uncommon so that was the allure for me. That being said, I enjoyed the adventure and would highly recommend this read if you are a fan of historicals or paranormals.
