Night Magic is a novella about Krista, a witch-in-hiding, who was forced to leave her beloved teaching job once her extracurricular magical activities are discovered. She moves to a new town and opens a bath-and-body store while keeping her witchy heritage hidden.
From the very first page, I got a bit of a Practical Magic vibe when reading this story. It happens to be in my top 50 favorite movies so I was pleasantly surprised to be reminded of it.
Our leading gentleman is Jon, a lawyer with a secret of his own. His beloved mother has been cursed and her spirit is trapped in the present, unable to rest. I found this paranormal part of the story to be highly intriguing. And as far as being a match for Krista, I thought Jon was a nice guy.
My reservations with this book mostly stem from the fact that it is a novella. There was certainly enough content and depth of story to make this a full-length novel. The characters could have been better fleshed out and there was definitely room for more interaction between the leading lad and lady to make the story more believable.
The romance was obviously rushed because of the length of the book and I thought the author missed a few good opportunities to enhance the story with more magic and paranormal activity. Had the attraction between the two been a result of an unknown magical bond, or something of that nature, I might have been more understanding of the insta-love. But, alas, even though I would have preferred a novel, I will judge it as the novella that it was. And as a novella, this was very entertaining.
Overall, this was a nice quick read. I highly encourage the author to expand on this story or write consecutive novellas to further develop the interesting world that was being built in Night Magic. 4 suns!
She makes an appointment and goes to see Jon Bartolo. Jon like Krista has some secrets of his own. Jon and Krista hit it off right off the bat. It is love at first sight.
Jon’s mother has been dead for three years now but she is still living in Jon’s home/business. She is stuck between life and death. She is a zombie. But don’t worry she is not the biting kind. No she is more of the ghost variety. Jon wants to let his mother go but he doesn’t have much choice in this matter. Jon has been searching for a way to help his mother pass on to the next life but so far has had no luck.
He wants to be with Krista very much but he is afraid to tell her his secret. He is afraid that she will run away. He doesn’t know that Krista has some secrets of her own that she is afraid of telling.
Night Magic is a great little read it will keep you up at night only because you can’t put it down. It is a very short read if life doesn’t get in the way that is. I was just as hooked as Krista right from the first page. If you love a good romance book with witches and ghost/zombies thrown in then you are going to love Night Magic I know I did.
