Night Moves: Pop Music in the Late '70s Paperback – July 17, 2000

4.2 out of 5 stars 18

The late '70s brought us an eclectic mix of popular music -everything from big hits (and even bigger hair) to cult favorites, along with the dawn of disco and punk, the coming of corporate rock, the rise of reggae and new wave, and some of the most progressive, inventive songwriting of the century.

Whether you cranked up your radio for Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, Supertramp, the Bee Gees, Talking Heads, Rickie Lee Jones, or Earth, Wind and Fire, you'll relive those heady days with this compulsively readable, behind-the-scenes account of the "Frampton years," an era when pop became very big business. It's all here, from ABBA to Zevon. This feisty, funny volume will leave pop fans of every stripe feeling Reunited, Afternoon Delight-ed, and Still Crazy After All These Years.

The jury is out. I don't yet know whether my son-in-law will read this book that I gave him for Christmas. However, it looked pretty good to me, and he's a 70s and 80s kind of guy. In addition, he loves music and knows a lot about it. My guess: We'll have a conversation about the book in the near future...and then I'll borrow it.

A good book, conjured up in an era when you couldn't fake it, and rely on the Internet to fill in the blanks! This one may be my favorite of the two Don wrote (I am sure it will pop up as a suggestion), though the other is cool, too.

The opinions are a little strong, but make for good '70's debate in the reader's head!

Haven't finished the book yet but so far it's very entertaining. It takes make back to the great 70's era with the music.

I bought the kindle version of this book by Jeff and Don Breithaupt. This is the follow-up to their first book, Precious and Few: Pop Music of the Early '70's. I own that book and thoroughly enjoyed reading it. This follow-up book is written in the same style. However, I tend to like the first book more. I'm not sure why... maybe this one feels more forced? Maybe the music covered in this book is less "fun"?

For any music fans who grew up in the 70's and is old enough to remember it, I'd recommend reading these books. These would be perfect books to bring on a long airplane flight or a vacation. Each chapter deals with one musical niche or artist or style, etc. The authors give funny opinions of the music and artists and are good at discerning how the public felt about the music at the time and how they likely feel about it now, looking back on it nostalgically. They do an excellent job of explaining how diverse popular music and a.m. radio was. You have to smile and laugh at many of their observations. And, best of all, these books make you want to revisit those old record again with fresh ears.

Wax nostalgic!

As pleased as I was, to see whole chapters devoted to Earth, Wind, & Fire & Steely Dan, I don't see the logic in naming a chapter- The Clinton Administration- & then, barely going into any detail about P-FUNK's music or their live performances. Parliament-Funkadelic is one of the BEST bands of all-time- Bootsy, Eddie Hazel, Fred & Maceo, Bernie Worrell, Michael Hampton, etc., they deserved better than the treatment in this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Book 2 of a 70s music discussion. Great read!
Reviewed in Canada on December 29, 2014
This is book 2 of the series covering the music of the last half of the 70s. The first book covering the first half of the 70s is called Precious And Few. Night Moves gets high marks for the music it covers. Everything from Andy Gibb to Frank Zappa has at least a mention in the book. I also enjoyed the fact that all is discussed with a sense of humour. No dry reading here!
Brothers Don and Jeff Breithaupt bring up personal remembrances from the day as well as discussion of more technical stuff such as chart positions etc. All in all it is an entertaining and interesting read.
4.5. Out of 5 stars. Well done guys.
