Lt. Derek Tawarrior is a homicide detective and former soldier living in post-apartheid South Africa. Though he still bears the scars of his Afrikaner lover’s violent death, for Derek Apartheid is the past. At work he patiently deals with a desk sergeant who can talk the ears of an elephant and who likes opining on the merits (or lack of thereof) of “candy coffee”. Derek is smart and tends to be suspicious of any conclusion that he had to jump more than three feet to get to. However, what at first seems like a simple kidnap of a rich Afrikaner’s daughter turns out to be a small piece of a wide-ranging and complex plot to destabilize the new South African government. Derek’s cop instincts alert him. Slowly, a pattern emerges and Derek discovers that the author of the plot is a mysterious figure who calls himself the Resurrection Man.

Once more, Derek begins to realize that the Resurrection Man is someone from his past. Indeed, Derek must ride out the pain of his past if he has any chance of catching the Resurrection Man. This story is as much about a man coping with a loss as it is about his struggle to bring a ruthless criminal to justice.

Not a bad thriller

I ended up finishing Thabo Nkomo’s “The Night Is My Dominion” in a single sitting last night and must say that I found myself hooked essentially from beginning to end.

Derek is certainly an admirable protagonist and his character is one of the main reasons why I enjoyed the book so much; I think it’s easy for authors to get lost in the detective archetype and try to do what everyone else is doing, which is something I come across often, so I was glad to see that this author wasn’t afraid to try something new and the end result has led to a genuinely unique and interesting character.

The thriller genre is my favorite of them all, and I must admit that I can be a bit overly-critical towards some thriller books because I feel that many authors don’t do the genre justice. That being said, and although I still think “The Night Is My Dominion” could benefit from improvement and some extra editing, I am ultimately quite satisfied with the read and I look forward to seeing what else the author will be able to offer readers in the future.

As a huge fan of the thriller and mystery genres, I am especially impressed by this compelling and original story. The abduction that occurs immediately as the book begins set the bar nice and high for the rest of the book, as we are introduced to our protagonist, Derek Tawarrior, a unique and interesting character, a homicide detective, who soon becomes aware of reported abductions occurring locally. In terms of quality, Derek's character development alone was enough to compel me through the pages, I never lost interest from start to finish, as well as the plot, which was uniquely compelling. The language and dialogue is filled with tension, thrills, and some gritty mystery to get your teeth into, I personally loved this book and will be reading all others stories that follow from this author. I recommend this to anyone who loves a good story, fiction, thrillers or mysteries.

This book hooked me within the first chapter when the woman was kidnapped by The Resurrection Man. At first, I thought this would be a horror-thriller but it was a mystery thriller. Either way, it added flavor to the genre.

Derek Tawarrior is a homicide detective who is racing against the clock to save those who have been abducted as well as capturing The Resurrection Man and bringing justice. We watch him grow exponentially along the way which is incredible for a shorter story. I hope this is the beginning of a series, I want to read more about Derek!

Thabo Nkomo has written a novel that draws you in from the very beginning. The very first pages set the premise for the remainder of the book as a young woman is kidnapped. The story-line moves quickly and is an easy and enjoyable read. The main character, Derek Tawarrior, a detective, who is investigating this case finds his past will come back into play as he must find "Resurrection Man". This book offers thrills, suspense and mystery. It's a great read and I highly recommend it.
