Chief Petty Officer, Garrett “Itch” Erickson answered Jenny’s prayers and saved her and her son from dire circumstances.
What follows is a heart-warming story of two people who find comfort and safety within the bounds of an unexpected relationship.
“Put your clothes back on.” He held her at arms length while he picked up her discarded dress and covered everything except her humiliation. “I know you’re scared―” His kindness was her undoing. Her tears fell in earnest.

The book is for anyone who dreams of a second chance.

Although bound in a short page count, the main characters in this novella are quite well developed. I appreciated the fact that the male lead was a charming, witty, all around nice guy who was also quite the alpha male without being domineering. He was the perfect man, without seeming overly perfect. By paring him with a woman who was very determined to provide for her son, but having trouble doing that, the author has created characters that you can’t help but get into.
The ending was quite abrupt which surprised me because of the detail in the rest of the story. Even with that one 'flaw' I wish the story had been longer than a novella.
I struggled between rating this story between 4 and 5 stars. Because of the abrupt ending, I decided on 4.5 stars. I highly recommend this quick read.
In a way it may be better not to know too much about the plot ahead of time because "One Night in Reno" keeps surprising the reader by ever expanding and always becoming a different kind of story.
To make this dynamic plot expansion work in a `little novel' requires that the writer create a non-obvious foundation for each new surprise. This takes a great deal of skill and most authors don't do it. Indeed, many `novellas' are really just long short stories. Not "One Night in Reno"! It has twelve chapters and as such it is a true `little novel' with the kind of story that delivers full size 300-page reading enjoyment. Enjoyment you can get in one night's reading. This is why I am a big fan of novellas. More reading enjoyment in far less reading time.
The writing style is fast and flawless. I never had to read a single sentence twice because the meaning wasn't clear on the first reading. This is how I'd like to write fiction. The prose serves as a great model for aspiring writers.
Also, each time there was an interesting twist in the story, I would think about it and concluded that I should have seen the twist coming. But I didn't and that was the most enjoyable part of all. To be surprised when the author was playing fair with you gives reading its spice. This is fresh, wake yourself up, writing. The author has a true talent for writing the novella.
I don't want to say too much about the plot because the blurb by the publisher tells you all you really need to know to decide if you want to read this story. But I can tell you this: "One Night in Reno" is a 5-start reading experience that makes me want to read everything else the author has written. This was my first Rogenna Brewer book read so I am delighted to have `discovered' another author I can look forward to reading! The price is right at 99 cents!
"One Night in Reno" gets my highest recommendation!
Here is a book with the title "One Night in Reno" but it takes place over a period of at least 7 days; what's up with that??? The cover also depicts a thong wearing hitchhiker yet the female protagonist is never described wearing a thong and never hitchhikes at any time in the story.
The author describes this one as a stand alone takeoff on secondary characters in another of her books. I found it to be a fairly well written short story which will have you rooting for the characters regardless of its unlikely story line.
If you have a little time to kill, this "sexless" teaser might just fill the bill. I gave it three stars due to a lack of character building, the misleading title and cover and the highly unlikely premise.
After losing her job and home in the same day, Jenny is in desperate need of help but, is too proud to ask for it or take it.
While on his way to Reno Nevada, Garrett see's a woman who seems to be down on her luck and helps her out.
They both realize that they need each other but, will Garrett let his guard down long enough to let someone else into his life? Will Jenny finally realize that not all men are the same?
