I have read all of Child's novels and this one did not compare. The pace was off, no edge of your seat thrills. Jack Reacher was his usual stolid competent self but something was missing.

Know what I like about Jack Reacher stories? They're clever, they're interesting, and they happen in an America that's described by a British author. None of those aspects apply to this novel. Not in the slightest. I've been a long-time Reacher fan, and I'm very sorry to say that this latest effort is just total rubbish. The publishers must have known this, yet they published this garbage with the name "Lee Child" on it, nonetheless, and that's a bloody shame. This is a vapid, uninteresting, sloppy tale, entirely unworthy of Jim Grant's pseudonym. By all means, check this book out from your local library, but for the love of the Army and all that which is meant by American Justice. . . please do not pay for it.

I do not believe Lee Child wrote Night School. The character, Reacher, falls far below the Reacher that fans of the past have admired. I was one. This Reacher depends on underdeveloped characters to make his faltering way through a confusing maze of people and sub-plots. Reacher is not Reacher. He's a sex object, a one-liner ad nauseam, a wizard guesser, and a jerk. The "$100 Million Dollar" theme is just silly. None of those things were EVER said of the old Reacher. Childs has sluffed off the drudgery of writing to a lesser soul. Too bad.

Ordinary and extremely boring. Not remotely in the same class as the other Reacher novels. One possibility: It was dredged out of a drawer of discarded works from Child's student days. If so, someone updated it a bit -- there's a sly reference to Tom Cruise. I gather from other reviews that the writer screwed up information about the actual Davy Crockett missile. The book is so bad, who cares? Verisimilitude is the least of its problems. Don't waste your money or your time.

Be forewarned! Night School is so "off" from the usual Reacher standards that appears as though sizable chunks have been produced by assistants and not Child himself. Though I do not read action/suspense novels looking for plot holes, implausible events, and errors, I found myself gagging my way through Night School as people say ridiculous things, do ridiculous things, and face absurd circumstances. I absolutely love the Jack Reacher character, and virtually every Reacher novel, but Night School is different. You need to know Reacher (and Neagley) through previous books, as there is not a single shred of characterization, let alone development, in Night School. The book begins with a snooze: the first full 30% of the book (on my Kindle) is utter nonsense that could be covered in one or two pages once the real action starts to unfold. Even when things get moving, the action stops and the plot grinds to a halt as the reader is forced to digest pointless, trivial dialogue and inconsequential non-events. I found the book so boring that I was able to compose this review even while reading it. I am sure Reacher fanatics will consider it worthwhile, but I am an avid fan myself, of both the character and his author, and consider this volume to be a true throwaway. There's a reason why the overall Amazing rating is so tepid at 3.9 -- a score inflated by loyalists. It's much worse than that. I hate to say it, but even Reacher enthusiasts can skip this one and miss nothing whatsoever.

Probably the Worst of the Reacher Novels! I was so disappointed having read all of the prior books. This, by far, was the worst. Frankly I wish I had saved my money and my time by not purchasing nor reading it.

I liked this better than Mr. Child's last offering, but I have a feeling Mr. Child has plateaued with this series of novels and he is simply now working hard to crank another book out. Set in the past history of reacher, it is an interesting book, but you have to wade through a whole lot of conversation, and the action is nothing short of plodding for at least 40% of the book. I hung in there and it came to a nice conclusion, but the Jack Reacher made famous in the first ten or so novels is missing in action in this book. Frankly, it was mildly entertaining, but more than a little boring.

Has the Reacher series run its course?? The last two in the series surely makes it feel that way.

I don't know what Lee Child was thinking when he wrote this book! I waited with great anticipation for this to finally arrive on my kindle. I finished it in one day, not because it was riveting or a page turner, but because I skipped over sentences and complete pages. Boring, truncated, ridiculous are the first words that pop in my head to describe this novel. I love this series, and was shocked when Tom Cruise portrayed Jack in the recent film, but I really didn't find it difficult to read this and not think of Cruise, although I could not see the Jack I was familiar with either. Good idea for a thriller, but a complete disappointment. In fat, so much so that I'm not sure I will read any more. I sort of feel like this was a sellout novel and Mr. Child is all about the money and hype now. He didn't stand up for his character portrayal of Jack, and it seems like this story was thrown together to simply generate more sales. It was great while it lasted.

Lee Child wrote a successful string of thrillers. This one is a gratuitous yawn. I am so sorry, as the earlier titles at least had momentum and radiated interest on the part of the author. Everything disappointing about a potboiler. Maybe it's time for a new hero.

I have read and enjoyed all of the Jack Reacher books until this one. I don't know why the author felt he had to include some very disgusting scenes in the bar. I didn't see that coming because I don't think I have ever read anything so offending and totally unnecessary to the plot. I didn't realize what I was reading until I had already read it. Sick, disgusting, and offensive. I deleted the book from my kindle, I hope in the future Mr. Child can find better less offensive ways to communicate his plot because I really like the Jack Reacher character.
