U.S. Review of Books “Stunning and absorbing plot on par with—if not better than—a Dan Brown novel. Truly an outstanding read, Night Sea Journey is one book that is hard to put down!”

ERIC HOFFER BOOK AWARD FINALIST, 2015. “This romantic fantasy is propelled by gorgeous language and imagery…angels and demons…The grime of inner city Chicago, the tranquility of the Rhode Island coastline, and the depths of a phantasmagoric ocean are the stages for this conflict.”

American author Paula Cappa deals with words. She has experience as a journalist for newspapers in New York and Connecticut, a freelance copywriter, editing health, business communications, magazines and news articles, newsletters and advertising copy, but her true love is writing both short stories and novels - that destination for words that satisfies her most. This book, NIGHT SEA JOURNEY was her debut novel and she has continued writing others since the publication of this book in 2012. From reading this isolated example of her talent it seems she has a secure future in her chose field of paranormal supernatural fantasy.

Cappa has that special gift of being able to make the supernatural natural, so polished is her prose and ability to string together ideas and development of same in a sustaining suspenseful manner. Even as she describes supernatural imagery her descriptive sense makes the quasi-visible visible. And that is a talent that will draw even those who are not keen on supernatural stories into her fold. In the instance of this story she places a gifted painter (Kip Livingston by name, and a image creator by trade) in an isolated house (Abasteron House) on Horn Island off Rhode Island. We are lead to believe she lives alone until Cappa informs us of other occupants: `Many know Duma as the angel-prince of dreams, blessed with spiky blond hair and shocking green eyes. The perfection of the universe requires these messengers who, on occasion, assume physical bodies or borrow them from nature.' And there is the ominous firehawk. So even in her prologue she places the supernatural... Nightly Kip is visited by a dark nocturnal creature (the FireHawk) who transports her to terrifying places (the night sea journey of the title).

Paula Cappa has sailed into uncharted waters. Dreams, in many cultures are said to be omens or the visions of the souls desires. Dreams are the playground of the subconscious and susceptible to the influence of the supernatural. The subconscious is the true self Kip finds herself confronting desires, passions and fears that her waking self rarely if ever acknowledges. This is fine as long as the dreams stay dreamland, this story explores the "what if" of that dreamscape overlapping into day to day reality.

A great read, a frightening thought, a book you cannot pass up!

Night Sea Journey, A Tale of the Supernatural is the debut book for author Paula Cappa. This book reminds me a lot of the movie “The Cell” with Jennifer Lopez (except that the roles are reversed with the priest and the woman is not a serial killer). The priest sets on a journey to help the sexy and seductive Kip to fight her demons. The vivid description in this book are amazing and makes the reader feel as though they are walking on the beach right with Kip. While the book is not scary per say, the descriptions of the paranormal creatures are not for the faint of heart. It only adds to the overall suspense in the book and leaves room for a second book to come. Ill be keeping an eye out for more works by this author in the future!

Night Sea Journey, A Tale of the Supernatural by Paula Cappa throws the reader into a world of religious beliefs, doubts, inner city violence, and inner faith. Kip Livingston lives in a small house on the coast of a small town. Every night she suffers the same dream: a serpent coming after her along with other biblical creatures of darkness. The problem is when she awakens, the dream isn’t over. Night after night she draws a gun and kills the serpent she finds between her sheets. Then, she drags it out to the dunes and buries it. No one believes her. Who would?
Raymond is a priest on the edge. She has strong feelings for women and he has lost his faith in the church. The only companion he has in this is Garcia, another priest who has taken a wife and works alongside police to bring down local drug thugs. Raymond has just found out that he is being shipped to a small town out on the coast to help rebuild the church and recover his faith. Garcia has just held a young girl in his arms and watched her die of a gunshot wound. As they go their separate ways with their own pains, they don’t know of what the world has in store for them. Upon arriving at his new church, Raymond begins having visions of wicked things. Running on the beach to try and clear his mind, he happens to hear gunshots and then witnesses a woman dragging a sack out of a small house and burying it in the sand. Has he just witnessed a murder? Or has a higher power brought him directly to the person who needs him most?
Night Sea Journey is a well written and insightful story into the human mind and biblical lore. It is a short read, but moves quickly and holds the reader’s attention. Fans of religious fiction will enjoy this along with readers of supernatural fiction.

“Night Sea Journey, A Tale of the Supernatural”, was written by Paula Cappa, and was an Eric Hoffer Book Award Winner in 2015. It is focused on the interactions between Father Raymond Kera, and an artist named Kip Livingston, who frequently is possessed by a supernatural entity she calls “The Firehawk”. This entity is able to break out of her dreams and intrude on her waking life, and is such a problem that even her Jungian therapist is unable to help her. Father Raymond discovers that Kip’s troubles actually descend to a level below consciousness, into something called decensus and infernos, Hades, in other words. The story focuses on the actions Father Raymond must take and the risks that he must take in order to rescue Kip from her Firehawk. The characters are very detailed, and the writing is descriptive, especially in the manner in which it depicts dreams, and it is easy for the one reading to get caught up in the characters and their lives. This is a pretty good supernatural thriller, and is full of suspense and intrigue. I received this book for free in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
