His daughter establishes a connection with his neighbor, Emberlyn, who has her own problems - being divorced from an abusive husband, but still harassed and stalked by him. This connection blossoms to include Shane and Emberlyn, one which develops into a strong love, initially encumbered by personal and other issues. With both Lana Rose and good sex at the core of the story, Shane and Emberlyn get married and eventually have their own child and life with Grandma and Lana Rose as family.
The connection between the characters is imbued with thrills as Emberlyn’s husband seems to appear out of the woodwork, notwithstanding locks and security systems. Lana Rose is kidnapped by the killer and Emberlyn’s husband, and saved by Shane and his boys. Emberlyn’s husband escapes but in the end it is poetic justice that she herself does him in.
The book is quite well written. I liked the fact that the story is told in short chapters, and in the first person, often presenting the individual-character view on issues, actions and events. The characters are likeable. The most likeable and pivotal is young Lana Rose, who is strong beyond her years, and not afraid to express her point of view, or to ask (unsettling) questions, even to expose waffling responses. She becomes the point around which everything is woven, including the growing closeness between Shane and Emberlyn. Her Grandma is a jewel, and an adult mother to her son in his love issues with Emberlyn. I’m not sure I agree with her misfortune, as I did not find it useful to the narrative or to character impact, e.g. bring them closer together. Adding to the excitement of the thrills and close calls, the romance is very steamy both in actions and in words.
I found it interesting that Emberlyn installed a security system on her home without a peephole on the door. She opens the door to (unknowingly) allow her ex-husband to enter, thus exposing both Lora Rose and herself to danger. Lastly, the book is laden with f-bombs, on average two per page. If the reader can get around this, the book will be an exciting romance-thriller.
So my expectations were not very high when I started this, first I don't read much romantic suspense and second, this author is an unknown for me.
Well, let me tell you Carey Decevito has blown me away with "Night Shift" I couldn't put this down, Simply stunning.
So on to my review, So this was my first book by the talented Carey Decevito and I would classify Night Shift as belonging to the romantic suspense genre.
The basic gist here is that Shane Peters a cop is on the hunt for a serial killer.
A killer that eight years ago murdered his wife leaving him a grieving widower with a baby daughter.
Ever since the killer has been murdering two women a year lookalikes to Shanes dead wife.
Shane knows its personal and is determined to apprehend the sadistic monster that stole his life.
Over the street to Shane lives Emberlyn a gorgeous sassy blonde with secrets and haunted eyes.
With Shane's little girl an avid fan of his neighbour, he himself starts to take a keen interest and it's not long before the two begin to fall, but with both their pasts gunning for them it's not long before they start to convene into one big mess.
So that's the condensed version of this enthralling story.
The story itself has no big twists in regards to plotlines but that really doesn't matter as this story and the emotion it conveys grab you by the throat instantly.
The main characters themselves are extremely likeable and the love story that slowly emerges is just beautiful in its simplicity.
I don't usually like dead perfect wife tropes, but it really didn't bother me with Night Shift maybe because the author manages to convey the intimacy and sentiments between Shane, Emberlyn and the little girl Rosie so perfectly.
I am just in love with this adorable little family.
I'm not really going to delve into the actual plot much as you can read that for yourself.
But I will just say, give this a go, I'm highly confident you won't be bored.
This story flowed brilliantly with plenty of action and had all the ingredients to keep its reader hooked to the very end.
I was provided with an ARC of Night Shift (Nightshade Book 2) by Carey Decevitoof which I have reviewed voluntary.
All opinions expressed are entirely my own.
Shane is a hard working detective for the local PD who spends way to much time at work. He is determined to hunt down the serial killer that started with his wife. When he isn't at work he is home with his little girl Rosie who is growing well beyond her years. Guess that is expected with a cop for a dad. Shane has not either wanted nor had time to begin looking for a new life partner.
Rosie has taken to the beautiful neighbor as a friend. Amber enjoys her company and loves spending time with the sweet girl. Life has not been simple for Amber and she is determined to do things for herself and be the strongest version of her she can be. She has noticed the sexy dad across the street but he doesn't seem to see her the same way.
When they finally come up close and personal the sparks begin to fly. Suddenly Shane has a want for more. When Amber gets spooked that her Ex has likely found her, Shame swoops in to care and protect her. Will she be able to move past the fears of the past and let him in?
This is a well paced book that kept me up late with a need to know what happens next and be sure is everyone OK. As I made my way to the ending I felt like the author did a great job of giving me the whole story without gaps, as I finished I know I will miss the characters but I didn't need more.
