This work of fantasy is entertaining to read. The style is simple and the plot very straightforward. Readers looking for a fantasy story with bold new ideas or pages upon pages dedicated to worldbuilding may be disappointed. But the author has succeeded very well at the goal of using a fantasy role playing game setting to set up and tell an entertaining story. Many of the common themes from retro table top role playing games are present and fans of those games will appreciate how well they fit into the larger narrative. They're common enough to keep the reader in the feeling of an RPG, and integrated well enough that they don't feel like mere token mentions but part of the natural progression of the story.
On it's own I would recommend this book to two groups. One being dedicated fantasy fans, as it's enjoyable to read and is written for such fans. Two being players using the author's table top RPG campaign setting including the titular Slateholm. It's short enough to be a quick read but provides a look into the world of the Western Lands and the kind of people who might be adventurers there. There's clearly much more to this fantasy world than has made it in the book which help make it feel natural and as realistic as a fantasy setting can be.
I'm looking forward to reading the follow up stories in the "sequel" book.
