I had this on pre-order and was waiting forever for it to come out. The rule of thumb in writing a sequel or continued series with same characters is to see if you can top the last book. Author , Robert Bryndza did just that, plus gave us a non-stop , heart pounding "Serial Killer Thriller". This is a stand alone story with some flashbacks given to the last one. I always recommend though, if your going to follow series always start with the first book. All The main characters from the last book return. This time DCI Erika Foster's character is fleshed out more, built upon, and somewhat loner, past revealed. ( Your even given her facial features which I don't remember knowing what she looked like until now.). Where in the last book it focused on her dealing with severe guilt and grief, trauma and returning to the workforce. She 's that same cynical , tenacious, strong, female Detective up against what I call " The Boys Club" on the force. Constantly having to prove herself all the time. Plus I love the playful banter between her and Forensic Pathologist , Isaac Strong. The plot is an elaborate , twisted , scheme of retribution. The depiction of a psychopathic ,monster was dead on. You can tell a lot of research went into this book . Even for the killer's MO.. The author kept that secret hidden well until the very ending...He keeps that suspense and tension high through out the entire story. I tried to guess, and got my first "shock" in the middle of the book. By the ending you given another shocker that's climatic and action packed .
When you think it's all over, instead of recognition, a clash with her Superintendent, Marsh Sparks , leaves Erika's future up in the air.

DI Erika Foster is called to a scene of the gruesome murder of Dr.

On a sweltering hot summer night the Night Stalker is watching. Watching a man from inside his house. Watching him heat a meal, shower, drink a glass of red wine and then stagger off to bed. The man is later found dead, tied to his bed and asphixyated by a plastic bag. When a second victim is found in similar circumstances a few days later DCI Erika Foster knows she has a serial killer on her hands.

This is a brilliant sequel to The Girl In The Ice. Gripping and compelling reading, it hits the ground running and doesn't stop. Who the Night Stalker is and why the victims are selected does not fit the usual profile of the serial killer so well known to crime fiction. Mr Brynzda has invented a serial killer we can feel some sympathy for, despite the creepiness of this killer stalking and then lying in wait for the selected victims to come home.

It was good to get to know DCI Foster better in this novel. Still grieving the death of her husband mark two years ago in a failed police operation led by her, she is still racked with guilt and loneliness. But she is a strong, dogged woman who will take risks and go against her Chief Super to find the killer. Her new team in London are warming to her and it was good to see their personalities develop more in this second novel of the series. Can't wait for the next instalment of this brilliant, well written series!

I'm apparently reading Bryznda's books in reverse order and I will definitely read his first. Detective Foster is easy to like, perhaps because she reminds us of all the other good detectives in good fiction: unconventional, successful, and under-appreciated by her by-the-book superiors. In the meantime, the readers are treated to a good yarn. Can't wait for the next one.
Apparently the author takes suggestions about Erica's smoking habits; how about she stops smoking completely?.....it's a disgusting habit and detracts (IMHO) from her likability.

I love these books with Erika Foster as the detective, she is a great character. Now there is more characters in this book that I really enjoy, too. I really like Isaac, he adds alot to the story. If anyone likes serial killer thrillers, I am sure they would enjoy this book.

This author has great skill in making his characters come to life. My emotions were moved repeatedly. The injustices Erika suffers by superiors who don't recognize and appreciate her skills made me angry. The evil personified in the name of revenge can't be separated from the tragedy of the life which hatched it. The Girl in the Ice was also terrific. Write fast Mr. Bryndza, we are waiting.

I first read The girl in the ice and now read The night stalker.
I LOVED both books. This author is amazing. I Love Detective Erika Foster.
Both books I could not put down. I am 77 years old and have read over a thousand books and this author with this new Detective series is one of the best I have ever read.
I thought Joe Nesbo was good with his Harry Hole books, but Robert Bryndza is the best.

Read both of Bryndza's books back to back. While Bryndza has a gifted writer's ability to produce a "page turner", his reliance on the over used and trite conflict between protagonist cop and the system, makes for a very difficult read. As far as story telling Bryndza does quite well. Bryndza connects us with interesting characters, and ever moving dialogue.
Too bad Erika has gotten her ass kicked in every single fight she encounters.
For the cost I was pleasantly surprised, however with that said I wish Erika a fond farewell.
