Darren McGavin returns as rumpled reporter Carl Kolchak, the shaggy, sharp-tongued newshound tracking supernatural phenomena in the skeptical modern world in this sequel to The Night Stalker. The Night Strangler finds the down-on-his-luck investigator in Seattle, hot on the trail of a serial killer hiding in the underground city beneath the streets of Seattle, a gas-lit fantasy world frozen in time (L.A.'s famous Bradbury Building--which has also appeared in Blade Runner and DOA--becomes the spooky city's architectural centerpiece). Exotic dancer and medical student Jo Ann Pflug tags along as partner and bait, and the exasperated Simon Oakland returns as Kolchak's harried editor. Genre fans will enjoy the appearances of popular character actors John Carradine, Margaret Hamilton, Wally Cox, and Al Lewis. Noted horror and science fiction author Richard Matheson scripts this meandering, low-key thriller with plenty of humor, which McGavin delivers with deadpan delight. This film spawned a TV series and inspired fan Chris Carter to create his own cult TV show two decades later: The X-Files. --Sean Axmaker

However both movies are true horror films that will at times mix in some drollery with the suspense. Carl Kolchak is very much a modern man as he is concerned with pretty women, how the Dodgers did last night, where there is a place for some good eats in town, and how to make the next buck. Yet as a modern man he would be subsumed by the depth, strength and transcendental importance of the affairs that would shortly entangle him, and so much so that as a representative of modern man we all became entangled with him. No matter how much gum he might take with him, that he might smack around in his mouth, or how many practical jokes or amusing asides he would play with his more serious minded boss, all this will not be worth a copper cent when he is closing in on a vampire that would like to bleed humanity as dry as Kolchak's penchant for jokes and informal manner.
The second film is merely good and not the great film "Stalker" was. However, even considering how fine a made-for-TV horror movie the latter was it would be eclipsed in a few years by Tobe Hooper's masterwork "Salem's Lot" (1979). Nevertheless, "Night Stalker" is not merely a great made-for-TV film but is a great movie by any standing. So then I would definitely recommend purchasing so you can enjoy the beginnings of the great age of American cinematic horror, 1970 - 1985 ...!

Also, if you have never seen the movie, it is a fun watch. Darren McGavin's Carl Kolchak is one of my fave characters and has a great charisma. He also has fantastic on-screen chemistry with Simon Oakland's Tony Vincenzo (and anyone else who crosses his path). It would have been a better movie, though, if they had given a little more story to the villain of the piece, Richard Anderson's titular character.
I will enjoy rewatching this in the years to come!
