Darren McGavin returns as rumpled reporter Carl Kolchak, the shaggy, sharp-tongued newshound tracking supernatural phenomena in the skeptical modern world in this sequel to The Night Stalker. The Night Strangler finds the down-on-his-luck investigator in Seattle, hot on the trail of a serial killer hiding in the underground city beneath the streets of Seattle, a gas-lit fantasy world frozen in time (L.A.'s famous Bradbury Building--which has also appeared in Blade Runner and DOA--becomes the spooky city's architectural centerpiece). Exotic dancer and medical student Jo Ann Pflug tags along as partner and bait, and the exasperated Simon Oakland returns as Kolchak's harried editor. Genre fans will enjoy the appearances of popular character actors John Carradine, Margaret Hamilton, Wally Cox, and Al Lewis. Noted horror and science fiction author Richard Matheson scripts this meandering, low-key thriller with plenty of humor, which McGavin delivers with deadpan delight. This film spawned a TV series and inspired fan Chris Carter to create his own cult TV show two decades later: The X-Files. --Sean Axmaker

Kolchak is the supernatural crime version of Columbo
5 out of 5 stars
Kolchak is the supernatural crime version of Columbo
Both of these movies garnished tremendous TV ratings when they first aired. The Night Stalker being the highest Nielson rated TV movie to date when it first aired on Jan 11th 1972. Darren McGavin was perfectly cast as the trouble prone investigative news reporter in his familiar crumpled suit, straw hat and driving his classic 1966 yellow Ford mustang convertible. Similar traits to Lt. Columbo but yet I realize two entirely different characters. Kolchak is an Independent wire services reporter chasing after a crime story lead that in his case always ends up having a supernatural antagonist with a shocking twist ending to it. I also compare Kolchak to Columbo because they both initially come across sometimes as bumbling and disorganized to the unaware observer. Both characters can be irritating to others at times with their constant off the wall questions and quirky mannerisms. However, as the viewer learns early on, it's all part of their own ingenious plan to catch their suspected culprit. The only difference is that when Kolchak succeeds, there's always some type of para normal circumstance left surrounding the case. Kolchak never tells anybody the true facts of the story. Why? Frankly it's because because he realizes nobody would ever believe him. It's a travesty of justice that this TV series only lasted just one season (20 episodes) on ABC between September 13, 1974 – March 28, 1975. Possibly, future theatrical releases or instead TV Movies of the Week would've earned higher numbers in fan viewership. However, the network was determined to go ahead with their plans of a weekly TV series. In fact I understand that Darren McGavin was all in the idea of doing future movie sequels . I just know as a kid I loved watching this weekly series. It didn't matter to me that the series was moved 3 times by the network to different timeslots and days of the week. As a loyal fan, I always sought it out. I never missed an episode. Unfortunately, I would imagine though that many adults, in all the confusion of finding the right air date, took the easier route available and just gave up looking entirely. That's probably the reason the show in the end was ultimately cancelled. Relive the brilliance of Kolchak and maybe for some of you, for just the very first time. Discover for yourself, why this double feature movie became a supernatural cult classic. Spawning a weekly TV series like no other. One that many imitators years later, tried desperately to duplicate in form, but still could never surpass the original. My advice is to pop yourself a bag of popcorn, turn down the lights, turn on the TV and just get ready to have yourself and your family a scary fun time. Enjoy.

First, I will say the quality, both sound & visual are excellent! Remember this is D.V.D.! And as to date the most affordable route to go. I recently purchased the D.V.D. complete Kolchak series...but unfortunately it didn't come with the 2 made for T.V. Piolets. I will say do not let the term made for T.V. put you off! These films were made in an area where T.V. competition was fierce. Actually these 2 feature length films are superior to most of the tripe coming out in theaters today. Ok, ok. Back to the product. You get the full-length pilot based on the book " The Night Stalker" which inspired the 2 Pilots & the Series. Please remember all of these were made between 1972 & I believe one of the series Episode's was made in 75. The first film is star studded. Kolchak's love interest was played by the gal that sang " The Morning After" in The Poseidon Adventure, 70's version. If your older like me, you will recognize many famous actors. As I said the competition was fierce, remember most people only got 3 or 4 channels, counting P.B.S.! Without giving away spoilers, I will say both movies are the complete long versions. And don't bother looking for " Widescreen" as this was filmed for T.V., so you are getting the art of filming intact. I would love to go on about these films but anymore would be superfluous. I will say this much. If you saw these movies & the series back in the day you know their worth getting. If you are younger but liked " The X Files", " Destination Truth< & shows about cryptid's this is the series that started it all. I say this because " Twilight Zone", "From Beyond" & others didn't focus on Cryptids like " The Night Stalker " did. This was my best option for updating my V.H.S. collection. In this economy I just couldn't swing for the Blu-Ray's. P.S. Youngsters, the special effects may seem a bit cheesy to you...but they were top notch in the 70's! As far as these 2 movies the special effects are just fine. Did I say Cheesy...yes there is a " Cheese Factor " in the writing of the series, but actor Darren Macgavin pulls it off with style! Purchase with care, make sure you're getting what you want!!! My adult children are still entertained with these movies & the series they spawned..

My mother got me into this, admittedly. This is so cool, the atmosphere in the movie, I particularly like the Night Strangler, a man who has developed a potion to gain immortality using blood and has also been committing a string of murders in a span of 2 decades since the late 1800's...wow! The Night Stalker was good too, I am a fan of the Vampire genre. Added to the collection...

I agree with some of the other reviewers here: the first film featuring Carl Kolchack, The Night Stalker, though shorter, was one of the best made for television movies of all time and is a much stronger film than the subsequent "Strangler". Both feature vampires and are about as equally believable. Yet the first is notably better at keeping up the suspense as it is a very gripping film and must have made quite an impact back in the early 1970s.

However both movies are true horror films that will at times mix in some drollery with the suspense. Carl Kolchak is very much a modern man as he is concerned with pretty women, how the Dodgers did last night, where there is a place for some good eats in town, and how to make the next buck. Yet as a modern man he would be subsumed by the depth, strength and transcendental importance of the affairs that would shortly entangle him, and so much so that as a representative of modern man we all became entangled with him. No matter how much gum he might take with him, that he might smack around in his mouth, or how many practical jokes or amusing asides he would play with his more serious minded boss, all this will not be worth a copper cent when he is closing in on a vampire that would like to bleed humanity as dry as Kolchak's penchant for jokes and informal manner.

The second film is merely good and not the great film "Stalker" was. However, even considering how fine a made-for-TV horror movie the latter was it would be eclipsed in a few years by Tobe Hooper's masterwork "Salem's Lot" (1979). Nevertheless, "Night Stalker" is not merely a great made-for-TV film but is a great movie by any standing. So then I would definitely recommend purchasing so you can enjoy the beginnings of the great age of American cinematic horror, 1970 - 1985 ...!

The DVD arrived by mail only 2 data late. No problem. There is one dvd with 1 film on one side and the other film on the other side of 1 Dvd. Both films have quality sound and video. I recommend it to all Kolchak fans!

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth it to see Kolchak in hi-def

I had seen "The Night Strangler" online a few times before buying this. It is definitely worth upgrading to BluRay. Seeing the movie in HD is just fantastic. Also the extra (the interviews) are very cool, too, especially with the guy who did the soundtrack.

Also, if you have never seen the movie, it is a fun watch. Darren McGavin's Carl Kolchak is one of my fave characters and has a great charisma. He also has fantastic on-screen chemistry with Simon Oakland's Tony Vincenzo (and anyone else who crosses his path). It would have been a better movie, though, if they had given a little more story to the villain of the piece, Richard Anderson's titular character.

I will enjoy rewatching this in the years to come!

5.0 out of 5 stars Kolchak is a hero!

I love these two movies. And I also love and have the Night Stalker series. I first saw these as a kid and they carry with them their own nostalgic charm. As an adult, they are just as good! Yes, they're dated, and yes the plots can be easily picked apart, but from an entertainment point of view they're great. On this particular disc, you get the two night stalker pilot movies (made I believe) before the series. Also, I'm glad to get this dvd as it's hard to find, and when you do find it, it's expensive. Good job Amazon and third party sellers!

5.0 out of 5 stars Review....

Anything british or U.S. when it comes to 70's/80's tv or tv-movies is a must for me personally. Darren Mcgavin-RIP, gives a cracking performance as the no-nonsense sneaky reporter who has a penchant to seek out and release the truth...(no matter what the authorities say) into the unknown i.e. occultist-style murders/vampires/ufo's/elixure-searching immortals etc... These 2 T.V. movie spin-offs by far out-do the tv series that came just before. Shot in the same format as a columbo/quincy-style format, these are a purists of the genre. Disc 1 for those not in the know starts with Karl Kolchak (McGavin) writing a report and told in 'flashback-to present (albeit stiffled by the authorities) about his battle with a modern-day vampire after a string of young women in vegas keep cropping-up rather pale, via 2 puncture wounds in the neck, Kolchaks sometimes darkly-humoured-style battles with the vampire, the press, the police etc in some parts are quality. Disc 2 is equally fantastic....same format, same background music (for the purists like me lol) only this time after being sacked, set a year or so later in the brilliant city of seattle, where he traces similar murders dating back a 100yrs+ of yet again 'young women' only with some sort of cerabelum fluid missing. Turns out its being used by a chap thats been reappearing every 70-odd years to remake and use this to sustain himself regardless of the costs of innocent young lives, enter kolchak to the rescue, with some amazing footage of the old seattle streets several feet below the modern city which as a kid watching, was fascinated by and would love to visit if there was a tourist attraction. Disappointingly however there dosen't seem to a region-2 dvd version, so its a case of multi-region dvd players for any of us brits i'm afraid, otherwise true fans enjoy....
