Following up his Warner Bros debut Atlantic Crossing was certainly going to be an interesting task. In the end similar ingrediants came into play with this Tom Dowd production and the same "slow half"/"fast half" approch but somehow this album wound up being one of Rod Stewart's all time classic albums and,in terms of his mid 70's career as relevent to his career as Every Picture Tells a Story was seven years prior to this. This album manages to build from some the slick,soulful roughness of the previous outing with something more of a pop polish,with the occasional use of reverb and echo in all of the right places. Unlike before the slow half begins the affair and,in actuallity all of these songs are more in the midtempo range than very slow. Of course we're all aware of "Tonight's The Night",one of those losing-ones-virginity tales that bridges Rod's more reflectivness of his Mercury years with the party hearty persona to come. Cat Steven's "The First Cut Is The Deepest" again draws on an acoustic soul style mixture of lovelorn heartbreak and emmerges as something of a less commercially sung Stewart classic. "Fool For You" is another great midtempo rock n soul jam and the side concludes with "The Killing Of Georgie",an excellently breezy jazzy pop tune with some resemblances to Lou Reeds "Walk On The Wild Side" musically and matched to what winds up as an (allegedly) accidental murder of one of Rod's friends in New York who was gay. Stewart wrote the song with a decidely straight but not narrow approch,illustrating his character with the same kindly sympathetic attitude given to the Miracle's "Ain't Nobody Straight In LA" around the same time frame. Four of the songs on the second half on are,as implied a faster variety of rock. Not too far seperated from the horn fueled rockers,in this case supplosed by the TOP horn section as Smiler but "The Balltrap","Pretty Flamingo" and "Big Bayou" have the same devil may care,reckless attitude of any Stone's record of the period,with that humanizing sense of wariness which culmintes on the slower tempod closer "Trade Winds" which explore the potential dark side of the sexual revolution to come,not that others beside Stewart couldn't see it coming anyway. Musically and lyrically this is one of Stewart's best conseived,produced and carried out albums and has a lot to offer just about anyone who enjoys high quality pop,rock and soul music.

This review is for the 2009 2CD Limited Edition (catalogue # R2 516570).

I only knew this album through the hits "Tonight's The Night (Gonna Be Alright)", The Killing of Georgie" and "The First Cut Is The Deepest" but bought it based on the multiple positive recommendations at the Steve Hoffman forums (the best place on the internet for discussing the sound quality of music releases). Audiophiles at that site (Google it) have said "... the original mastering is a little brighter in the upper frequencies, and I think that Rod's voice sounds more natural on the new remaster .... These releases are really great and worthwhile" - I agree 100% with those comments.

This 2CD set has excellent sound quality that is a worthwhile upgrade over ALL previous releases.

Bottom line:
- This album has converted me from a casual fan to a much more serious Rod Stewart fan.
- The SQ is very very good. The packaging is superb (although I'm not the biggest fan of this digi-pak style), although all the artwork is printed on thick card and the booklet is printed on very good quality paper. The graphics are excellent quality.

Highly recommended to buy this - even if you're just a casual Rod fan (as I was), you will find extra material on here worth listening to. It's that good I also bought the Atlantic Crossing (2 CD Limited Edition) too!

"Killing Of Georgie" Is Why You Want This CD...

The subject matter contained in that song wasn't even something you would talk about when this album was first released in the 1970's...it is Rod Stewart Storytelling at it's very best...if you have never heard it you need to...the rest of the cd is very good. It's broken up into a set of fast rockers and a set of slower, mellow tunes...the vinyl record was broken up by side one and side two...I don't remember which side was what but the cd of course will just play through all the tracks but that was not how it was meant to be listened to...the hits came from the softer side of the record...if you're new to Rod Stewart I would start with "Every Picture Tells A Story" or "Never A Dull Moment" because this album marks a change in where Rod's music was heading....some people loved it and others didn't...if you're looking for "Rod The Mod" then start elsewhere...if you're collecting/building a Rod Stewart Collection then this is a must have album...

The deluxe editions of A Night On The Town and Atlantic Crossing that were released in 2009 were both fantastic. Terrific sound quality and excellent bonus material. They represent the best of what archival reissues should be. But I am concerned that with the financial decline of Rhino Records, that the remaining reissues in this series will not be released. Deluxe editions of Footloose and Fancy Free and Blondes Have More Fun were supposed to have been released in early 2010 but they have fallen off the radar. What a shame. The remastering is all done and all they have to do is release it. You'd think with Do Ya Think I'm Sexy? being voted one of the 500 Greatest Songs in the current Rolling Stone collector's edition, that this would be a great time to put out such a reissue. I hope that the rest of these collector's editions are released. Write to Warners/Rhino if you'd also like to seem them released. I understand the work is already done on all of them and they're just sitting there waiting to be released.

Rod's incredible run of excellent albums continues

You've got to hand it to Rod Stewart. His early run of albums is pretty much unbeaten for quality - The Rod Stewart Album, Gasolene Alley, Every Picture Tells a Story, Never a Dull Moment. By the time he got to A Night on the Town he had gone from working class lad to worldwide celebrity -- especially given his romance with Brett Ekland. That could have spelt trouble - a drop in quality - but fortunately A Night on the Town is very impressive. Some great covers and of course the hit Tonight's the Night - but especially the Killing of Georgie which surely is one of Rod's greatest ever songs.

Of the albums released after Rod Stewart "sold out" and became a somewhat preposterous, preening superstar, this is by far my favourite. I prefer it to the incredibly successful predecessor "Atlantic Crossing". It is packed full of excellent, riffy rock songs and big rock ballads of the sort that Stewart did so well.

First up is the sensual, seductive majesty of "Tonight's The Night" with Rod going all lecherous as he tells his innocent young companion just exactly how good her night is going to be. It is ludicrously corny, of course but I can't help but love it. The original recording had Rod's squeeze at the time, Britt Ekland, sighing and cooing all over the end part. Subsequent releases have deleted it out, which was a shame as the vocals added a certain erotic atmosphere. "The First Cut Is The Deepest" is an absolutely stonking cover of Cat Stevens' tender original. Stewart turns it into a soulful anthem. "Fool For You" is a romantic tribute to a lover, with Rod preferring her to Streisand, Bardot and Loren. This is very much a typical mid-seventies Rod Stewart melodic organ-driven ballad.

"The Killing Of Georgie" is a remarkable song. A slow tempo, moving narrative about a friend of Stewart's killed (possibly) for being gay in the mid-seventies in New York. It may seem strange now, but a song like this was genuinely ground-breaking in 1976. Songs treating homosexuals sympathetically were extremely thin on the ground. Stewart's song was extremely tender and sensitive, coming from such a "lad". Fair play to him at the time.

The old "side two" was the "fast" side, for a night out. It is full of classic Stewart rock. "The Balltrap" is a pulsating tale about having continual sexual encounters with the same woman, who has poor old Rod by the balls, it would seem. Manfred Mann's "Pretty Flamingo" is covered soulfully in true Stewart style, not detracting from the original in any way. "Big Bayou" is a pounding, horn-driven Stewart original rocker and "The Wild Side Of Life" is given a barroom honky-tonk makeover.

"Trade Winds" ends on a slow tempo note with a captivating ballad ending in a big singalong chorus. In many ways this is a commercial album that gets critically-ignored, which is a shame as it has hidden depths. A quick half hour of this every now and again is good for you.
