Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

This disc must be intended for insomniacs; it has that three-in-the-morning feel. The single movements featured are for the most part well performed. And some are decidedly off the beaten track, like Wojciech Kilar's Death and the Maiden (no relation to Schubert's) from the soundtrack to the movie, Paulina's Secret. And we also get English horn player Thomas Stacy doing the solo from the slow movement of Dvorák's New World Symphony with the New York Philharmonic. Also, there is violinist Tasmin Little and the BBC Symphony in a beautiful, dewy performance of The Lark Ascending by Vaughan Williams. -- Gwendolyn Freed

I'm a huge fan of classical music, and when I was looking for a CD of gentle, relaxing pieces without the sugar-sweetness of Grieg's "Morning", I found Night Tracks. The compilations on this CD are very slow, moody, and dark. Perfect for falling asleep to or just curling up with a good book on a rainy day! One thing to note: I like the idea of having an "intro" to the CD. The first song ("A London Symphony") is only a 30 second excerpt, but it is very slow and sleep-inducing, which perfectly leads you into the beautiful "Death and the Maiden" and other songs. The Amazon.com review summed it up the best - it does have "that three-in-the-morning-feel", and it's all the better because of that.

I like every single track on this CD. It's perfect for a quiet night of relaxing, or for a Sunday morning over coffee and the New York Times. It even relaxes my dog! I don't recommend it though if you're driving or operating heavy equipment. ;)

This is one of my FAVORITE CDs in a collection of thousands! Not only are almost all the pieces gorgeous, but there are lots of titles rarely found! The performances are all exquisitely soft and loving. This cd is absolutely perfect for a quiet evening by the fire to soothe the soul! Would love to see more of these!

I love this recording for its thought-provoking selections. I wouldn't suggest reading while you listen, you'll get too distracted. Maybe a long soak in the bath and a nice glass of wine. It's great for thinking things over. If I have a criticism, it's the odd themes from Dvorak, Copland, Vaughn Williams and Verdi. Playing just a taste of a theme from something doesn't satisfy. But the Bach, Kilar, Espere and the rest are wonderful.

This is one of the best classical relaxation albums. I have many, from "Adagios for After Hours," "Classical Chillout," "Peaceful Adagios" to about a dozen more and this is one of the best. It's just the right mood with the pieces and performances. It's not meant to wow you with in your face performances or give a history lesson with music selection, rather it just wants to set a mood within the range of classical pieces. One of its tricks & wisdoms, unlike most other such compilations, is its tempo. It aims at consistency within a relaxed tempo. I personally find listening to this best at a low volume placed in the background. Great job!

Truly one of the best collections of relaxing classical music. A must have for couples when the kids are gone, or just some quiet time alone. Soothing to the mind, body and soul.

I've had this album for about 10 years, and it remains one of my top 5 favorite classical albums. Beautiful musical choices, beautifully performed.

Was searching Amazon for an exact song title I'd heard on a local classical station, and this CD came up. I read the reviews and decided I would try it. It is probably one of the best classical compilations I have ever heard. I tell everyone about it and recommend it.
