Clashing cultures and benevolent but occasionally misguided alien AI overlords bedevil the overworked and underpaid bureaucrats of Earth's consulate on a space station in the far future. Ambassador Kelly Frank struggles to keep Earth businesspeople afloat in the face of counterfeit kitchen appliances, prevent schoolchildren from negotiating away land rights, and deal with a mother who continually calls collect to nag her about wanting grandchildren, while mercenary-turned-salvage operator Joe McAllister raises an adopted son and struggles to figure out what the heck most of his inventory even is.

It's the mentality of The Office applied to the foreign service, set in a world where humans refreshingly are not only NOT the top dogs of the galaxy, they're not even in the top ten. Absurdist humor and lovable characters.

I bought this book because I've wanted to get acquainted with the space opera comedies. I want to write one.
I expected it to be cheap and shallow and heavy on word humour which I mostly despise. I (unusually for me) didn't check the reviews but 700+ reviews counted for a good book.
So. There wasn't that much word humour, I wouldn't even call it a comedy, but the humour was situational and creative. Well balanced. Or maybe I missed some of it because the language is not shallow and I'm not a native speaker.
I thought I was going to buy one book and that's it. It seems I'll spend more. I just hope the protagonists stay the same.

My Kindle has strange ideas about what I like to read, so the first few hundred times it suggested DATE NIGHT ON UNION STATION, I ignored it. Eventually, I looked at the book's Amazon page and saw it was inexpensive and decided to give it a try. It was more expensive than I expected because after reading the first two, I went ahead and bought te complete series, and now have read all but one of them.

Foner has suceeded in creating an oddly believable future full of characters I enjoy encountering book after book and Foner has a gift for endings where most things work out for the best. In this, the first book, the final meeting of the romantic leads is predictable but there are enough surprises along the way. The tone is generally humorous and the dialogue and situtations funny.

So let that initial price seduce you--but be aware there are ten more books and one in the works.

NOTE ... If you are cost-conscious and are expecting a full-length novel from these books, please know that each is about 1/2 of what I call a full-length novel -- more like a novella. That said, I love these stories and will be buying each one. I am trying to keep one unread on my Kindle ... because they are a fast, fun read that keep you wanting more. They are full of humor, relationships, and interesting premises about alien relationships. I found myself laughing out loud despite being alone in the room. To those who've said, "Great book" I say, "Meetoo." :D

Surprisingly I really enjoyed this book. I say that because Sci-fi is not my favorite genre. I read this book for SciFi June Readathon. I really liked the characters. The dates were funny. I found myself laughing out loud at times. The setting was interesting to me. It was a perfect mix of things I am familiar with and things that were futuristic. I want more so I will be reading the rest of the books in the series.
For those interested. It has some adult situations, though I don't recall anything graphic. Nor do I recall swearing.

This is the first book in a series that takes place mainly on Union Station. It well written, humorous, and leaves you wanting to see what happens next. It is a book about characters, and you want to know what happens to all the characters through time. And, as in life, more characters are introduced for you to wonder about. After reading all eleven books, I'm still waiting for the next one!

Also, he's done a brilliant book on dragons, Meghan's Dragon is just as good as the Union Station books, and I'm waiting for another of those, too.

I like Kelly; I like Joe. Their hasty nuptials may be ill advised, but the book was cute and should have been an easy read. I am not unfamiliar with sci fi, but when a reader is thrown into a world full of aliens with alien names and little explanation or phonetic help, the reading slows down. I actually put the book down, read another, lengthy book, and decided to give Union Station another go. I'm glad I did. I have even purchased Book 2. I see potential. There were several places where I smiled and even chuckled at the clever situations and dialog.

The title struck me as a bit odd so I had to go for it. What we have here is an acting consulate from Earth Central on her own in the largest space station having to make important decisions with no real communications back home, no good income and to top it off, MOM keeps calling collect (interstellar calls are pricey) and is bugging her about getting married.

So, our hero has to deal with planet impacting issues, and find a suitable date via the local dating service (Alien dating service) who knows nothing about humans.....

The book is not really a hard sci-fi book outside of the settings so we don't get into high tech stuff, just how things happen over a few weeks for the Acting Consulate. The book is funny, witty and darned fun to read. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It did have a couple of surprises in the story that were welcome and added to the quality of the book.

Thanks for such a great read.

Forget the horrible cover, this was an intelligent and highly entertaining read! If you can imagine a job where your office manager makes more than you do as the consul/ambassador and a benevolent artificial intelligence fosters remedial planets like Earth--while running a dating agency--then you can get an idea of the tone of this excellent read. There is humor but also real work and conundrums in Kate's job and it's fascinating to watch how she handles it all. The romance factor is light, honestly, and the dates are worse than your worst stories. Where the book really excels is world-building. The sci-fi aspects are really well done and original. It's not flashy tech or colorful aliens either, it's the culture that has evolved and the way things have played out on Earth and in space after the Styrx AI race steps in to provide their brand of aid. I also really appreciated how the minor characters and bit players were so interesting as well--I genuinely smiled over the antics of Jeeves and the flower girls. I got this as a free read and it was a great decision on the author's part because I will definitely follow up with others in the series--despite the bad covers!

I took a chance on this one because it had so many good reviews I figured I could overlook the cover-art. Of course, there's a campy sort of humor at play with the author reusing the same image over and over with only a slight change. I admit it, I tend to judge a book by its cover, at least in part.

That said, this is some good straightforward fun. If you liked Iain Banks' Culture novels and wished there were a more light-hearted, funny story with some of the same feel to it, this series could be it.

I got four books in before I remembere to come back and do a review of #1, if that tells you anything.
