Good for the price, but clips break easily and name is misleading.

For the price, this is great and suits my needs. But before we even used it for the first time, my spouse attempted to clip it to my laptop and the clip broke. I haven't superglued it yet, but I still managed to get it to stay on my laptop somewhat loosely and that was good enough. It was inexpensive enough that it wasn't even worth it for me to try to contact the seller to try to exchange it.

It says "Night Vision" in the name. I thought that meant that it had a very sensitive lens and could take video in the darkness. It can take video in the darkness, but only because it has 6 LED lights on the front that blind you as you're using it. You can dial the brightness down or not use the lights at all. It's very handy to have the lights so that you don't have to make sure you have a lot of other bright lamps in the room. However, I think the name is misleading because if you thought you'd use this in darkness know that the LEDs are bright, they will do a good job of illuminating what the webcam is recording, but if you're looking straight into the webcam, it's very very bright.

The microphone does work, but it's not as sensitive as my laptop's internal mic, so we didn't use the one on the webcam.

For the money, You can't beat it, Wrong description

This item does what it is supposed to. Picture quality is above average. The led light control is inconvenient because it is located on the cord and not the unit which is fine for laptop users but hard to get to for desktop users where the camera is on top of the monitor which will hide the cord.

Also, the description states that this webcam has a mic built in, it does not. On the company's website their description states "no built in mic". I believe this is an Amazon error.

Overall, you can't go wrong.

Great deal for price

I run a paranormal investigation group and already have a DVR with 4 CCTV cameras but wanted something that could be used for smaller investigations where space was an issue. Instead of hauling a folding table, DVR, cameras and cords, it would be much easier to simply use a web cam and laptop to record one single area.

It took longer than expected to receive the item but it arrived in good shape but did not come with software. I tested it with both Windows XP and Windows 7 and both installed drivers for the device. No manual came with the web cam either so I'm not sure if the button on top is supposed to snap a photo or cut the audio. If it is supposed to snap a photo then the Windows drivers do not support that function because as far as I can tell pressing the button does nothing.

The first thing I did was take the web cam apart and remove the infrared filter. Most web cams have a thin plastic filter but this one had a glass filter glued into the lens. I used a small screwdriver and broke the glass and scraped it all out. The web cam now records in complete darkness.

The ability to turn off the LED lights completely is a great addition to this camera. Overall the picture quality is very good and the audio works very well.

This web cam is NOT a true 'night vision' camera unless you remove the IR filter. It simply has LED lights to illuminate the subject in the dark, like having a desk-lamp next to the camera at night. If you want this camera to record infrared night vision video you will need to remove the filter, but once you do that it sees extremely well in complete and total darkness. The infrared video quality is as good and in some cases better than my much more expensive CCTV infrared security cameras.

Update: One thing to note, by removing the filter this camera will be completely useless during the daytime. I have been doing a live web feed of the creepy abandoned house across the street at night and you can see the house extremely well even though it is for the most part pitch black outside. The video from this camera will be much more detailed than the naked eye at night. It also appears to be a full-spectrum web cam after you remove the filter as it picks up both my IR and UV lights when I tested them. It makes the grass in the yard across the street look like snow so you can tell you're getting some decent night vision out of this thing.

EXCELLENT VALUE IF YOU READ THIS:

Camera comes with NO INSTRUCTIONS. Simply plug it into any USB port and a driver loads for it. Windows 7 compatible.

There IS A MICROPHONE in the camera but it is limited in sound quality as you would expect by the price. Simply plug the audio plug (part of the Camera's USB cable) into your MICROPHONE input and select it as the recording source per your operating system control panel.

Very good picture quality in full color. The camera MAY require manual focusing for the sharpest picture. Simply turn the camera lense ring to adjust (about a quarter turn in either direction is the effective range.)

There is NO NIGHT VISION at all! There are 6 LED's that can be turned off/on or adjusted in between by a clunky wheel on the camera cord. Crude but somewhat effective for low light conditions.

The button on top supposedly takes a still snapshot but your software must recognize it for this to work.

The camera has a flimsy attachment clip and swivel stand. Better to tape your camera into place!

For $5-$10 this is a reasonably good buy compared to store bought cameras starting at $20+. Just remember that your camera won't do ANYTHING unless you have a software program like Skype or similar to recognize it.
